Recommendation for HDMI Monitor: 24" Vs Wide Screen Monitor Vs 4k Monitor ($200 - $300)

I am looking to get out from my stoneage cave and looking for a HDMI monitor, an upgrade from my current VGA monitor.

I saw that S2421HN mentioned in recent deals and dell's products seems to be quite popular in ozb thanks to @dealbot

I will use them mostly for work/spreadsheet, watching netflix and occasional gaming like XCOM. I dont play FPS at all due to my motion sickness (A gift, saving me from being hooked with AAA title game).

24" seems to be good size for me as I am planning to put them side by side with my laptop. Has anyone here working heavily with spreadsheet/coding and have good experience with side by side view, inside one big wide screen? On the side notes, from my reading, 4k monitor seems to be nice for watching movies. Not sure if between $200-$300 would be able to buy those fancy wide screen or 4k monitor.

Lets say if I go for Dell 24" monitor, does S2421HN @ $169 would be the best bang for the bucks nowadays? Is it an overkill or too basic for my need? Would it be better to get big wide screen monitor or 4k monitor instead? Let me know if there is any different recommendation?

Thanks for your inputs!

  • 24" is far too small nowadays for watching or gaming. You don't need 4K unless you're going above 32" and actually have 4K media to consume.

Most FPS games have settings to disable Motion Blur which is most likely what is causing your motion sickness. Try disabling that and see if it helps.

  • 4K 27". You'll never look back

  • 27” 1440p is the sweet spot these days. 34” 4k is also popular.

  • I did some more research after reading the above, it seems that S2721 Dell will be my go to! Thanks for the inputs!
