  • RAWHIDE!

Rawhide is meant to be pretty bad for dogs aren't they? Especially if you have an aggressive chewer, the rawhide chunks can get stuck in their intestines, and cause a lot of intestinal distress

You might want to google the process of how they produce rawhide pet products…

Hides are treated with a chemical bath to help “preserve” the product during transport to help and delay the rate of decaying
Hides are then treated with chemicals that help “puff” the hide, making it easier to split into layers
Hides are washed and whitened using a solution of hydrogen peroxide and/or bleach; this will also help remove the smell of the rotten or putrid leather (Research also shows that other chemicals may be used here to help the whitening process if the bleach isn’t strong enough)
Basted, smoked, and decoratively tinted products might be any color (or odor) underneath the coating of (often artificial) dyes and flavors…They can even be painted with a coating of titanium oxide to make them appear white and pretty on the pet store shelves

Then the standard warning… Choking or blockages. If your dog swallows large pieces of rawhide, the rawhide can get stuck in the esophagus or other parts of the digestive tract. Sometimes, abdominal surgery is needed to remove them from the stomach or intestines. If it isn’t resolved, a blockage can lead to death.

      Grim. I'm convinced.

      I bought 5.

I need to do more research on rawhide!

Do not give this crap to your dog.

Rawhide does not dissolve in the dog's stomach. In fact, the opposite is true — the rawhide swells up. Far from being broken down, rawhide forces your dog to pass the pieces they swallow, making for a risk of bowel blockage.

Just get some fresh meat or bones then give to your dog. Please don’t cheap out on your dogs health with raw hide or various other “treats”

    • From my research, don't get weight bearing bones, like legs. Too hard for their teeth and will cause problems.

      • You are right, soft brisket bones, turkey necks or lamb necks would be best. Chicken frames are also a bad idea if you ask me which a lot of people feed their dogs.

  • At risk of getting negged…
I’ve tried this for my puppy (one of their bigger fake bones) and it was fine. Lasted much longer than a bully stick. Kept an eye on him and made sure he chewed everything up and didn’t try to swallow any big bits.
Will I buy more? I don’t know. They’re not inherently evil things

    • DId you read the part where "Once the hide arrives at a tannery, it is soaked and treated with lime to help separate the fat from the skin, the hair is removed by chemical and physical efforts"
They're talking about lime (Calcium Oxide is a white-to-gray, odorless solid. It is used in building materials, metal processing, agriculture and sewage treatment.) not your every day citrus lime.
