Two Contract Offers (One in Hand and The Other Is Coming in Two Weeks)

Hi all,

So I have two contract offers (one from an MSP and one from an inhouse IT department). Both are for 70k so money is not the reason I prefer the in-house department (more because I want to work in a less stressful environment).

The issue is the MSP has sent me a contract and the inhouse IT department said it will take about two weeks before I will get a contract from them as they are a large company and require many different signatures.

I was thinking of signing the MSP contract and then if the inhouse environment does get back to me, just calling the MSP and letting em know Im going a different way (scummy thing to do but I cannot think of another way)

Please chime in (not even sure if I can do this after signing a contract with an employer)

  • Your MSP contract will have the terms of the probation period and notice you need to provide. Follow that.

    Or maybe,

IT dept has 2 candidates, and waiting for an other to sign, before sending you theirs…..

and the other is waiting for a contract from MSP, which MSP is waiting for OP to sign or reject before offering it to the other person with the IT dept contract…..

Better to go with MSP. Get more experience and they might even pay for your certification. In one or two years you will be able to get a new job and might even able to double what you currently have in offer (depending on your line of specialisation). Stuck in an in house IT generally is never a good idea. If you really follow my advice, DM me when you get a new job and please tell me if I'm right/wrong.

  • If you prefer inhouse let them know you have a contract waiting already and if they can't get it to you within 2 days you will sign with the other. Think of yourself first, what if the other offer never eventuates because of of these other signatures they are trying to get objects? Better to have something concrete first that a verbal offer.

  • The in-house IT Dept don't need many different signatures at all.

    They just need yours.

  • Be aware that big companies can go through the hiring process and then put a hiring freeze on when they find the right candidate, but cannot hire them due to the hiring freeze.

I have seen this from the inside the company and also when applying for jobs, so do not count on the in house job until you get the contact in your hand.

  • Scummy maybe, but do what is in your best interests because no-one else will.

Just note that the MSP may never look at you again if you renege. If that doesn’t affect your future career plans then go ahead.

a little shitty to accept a contract then back out of it within a couple of weeks, but whatever, do whats best for you and just expect to steer clear of those guys for a while. as long as its not a tiny industry its unlikely to matter much. not like any company will promise to never hurt your feelings either, so meh

but, id be trying to light a fire under the in house guys and assessing their response. if theyve made a decision, it shouldnt take 2 weeks to get a contract. if they want you and you are telling them you cant wait, they should be able to get things moving very quickly.
if they cant speed things up, then you might be looking at a disorganised company that will cause similar difficulties for you as an employee. this might work out well if you want something cruisy, but its a gamble. if they dont give you the right resources for the job, will you be be spending your days unable to do anything and chilling, or wasting time on processes that take 5x longer than they should…

but might be more likely that they wanna drag their feet making that decision in the first place. they might be looking at other decent candidates, or they thinking of canning the position completely etc. you might really get that offer in a couple of weeks, but until something is in hand, or at least in motion, better to assume it might not happen at all, and that they just might not be as eager and interested in you as you are in them
