Citibank Credit Card Closure process

Anyone tried to talk to a real person that works at Citibank.

The account closure process takes a good hour after speaking to multiple people in a foreign country who struggle with an Australian person. The process is designed to stop people leaving.

Today I got an email stating another transaction had gone through my closed account which they failed to reject. I first tried to log in as instructed which was rejected . Then I rang their call centre who after a 45 min wait told me there was no transaction. They refused to help me any further and told me they had no record of the email even when I told them i would happily send a copy (they don’t accept emails).

Avoid. The points aren’t worth the drama.

  • thought they sold off their retail business

  • Oh thats painful. I got approved for and then closed an account with Citi because I got a better offer from another bank at the same bloody time, anyway, cut the cards up and rang them up and it was cancelled (actually (profanity) amazed it was appoved, i've never had a citibank one approved in the past). My original card was a Latitude card and they confirmed no transactions would go through after card was cancelled, and they have not

Any reason you didn't opt to do it through online banking? It takes about 3 clicks once you're logged in - completed mine in under 2 minutes

    • OP posted ". I first tried to log in as instructed which was rejected "

I think that log in refers to AFTER the supposed account closure by the call centre.

I closed my Citibank credit card two years ago. Closing it online was painless. Only required a few clicks at it was done.

    • Did they pro rata refund your annual fee?

  • The account closure process takes a good hour

    Citibank = 💩 🏦.

They should use some of the profit to make an app that closes accounts in 2 min.

  • I feel your pain, OP, Citibank is the Hotel California of the banking world.
I had a Citibank credit card nine years ago that I closed.
For the next four months, I got direct debits and standing orders applied to the closed card that Citibank paid out on, so they kept billing me.
I had to contact each provider to stop them making direct debits.
If I was in your position now, I would register a formal complaint with Citibank and then upgrade it to the banking ombudsman. It's ridiculous that Citibank should allow transactions on a "closed" card.
In the meantime, you could ask Citibank for a list of direct debits and standing orders on your account and stop them.

Shouldn't you have cancelled the direct debits before cancelling the card?

I closed mine online, after making the balance to $0.
A few clicks and a letter was received in a couple of days.

The painful process was one with CBA and BankWest.

Should've done it online. Very quick and easy. So who made that transaction?

Legally all credit card providers must offer you a way to do it online.
Looking at Citibank it appears they offer it via online banking.
It is instant, automatic and generates a final statement

So its not painful… its painless if you do it the right way.
