The OzBargain Effect - Does OzBargain Normalise Uncritical Consumerism?

I like to think of myself as someone who is autonomous, is able to critique capitalism, is mindful consumerism, and attempts to minimise negative environmental impacts. But then I am regularly scrolling Ozbargain, and each now and then I look around and see things I bought that I never really needed.

    Can't it do both?

On OzBargain I see the most savvy consumers on the market and also ridiculous herd/FOMO behaviour where a lot of people will buy something just because it's cheap, is on the front page, or seems like a good deal.

The irony is paying any $ for something you don't want or need is not a bargain unless it's worth your time and effort to resell it for more $

We buy things we don't want, with money we don't have, to please people we don't like.

So a normal human being then. Who hasn't picked up a chocolate bar at the cashier on an impulse because they fancied it but didn't pop in for it specifically. Nothing wrong with that.

That is not the OzBargain way. Put it back, go back to the aisle and see what is on special or on the bottom shelves.

    • I would be one of those people you are talking about that has never done that haha :P Sounds a lot like my wife though

      • You have never ever purchased something frivolous that caught your eye at a supermarket? Impressive self-control if so.

Not to my knowledge. I do have a game if you will for sweet treats though. You get to pick an item from the bakery that if it is on special that week you can get 1x of the item in the weekly grocery shop, however if it is on quick sale during the week you are also allowed to get it. No need financially to do it but just something of a game rather than doughnuts every week lol

Resolved to not cave on FOMO for the Knipex Smart Grip 250mm (10 Inch) Pliers deal now wondering if I missed a sick deal.

    • I’ve heard very good things about Knipex pliers. Maybe you did miss out…

I used to buy everything then now based on comments of users. Lot of good reviewers in Oz bargain

  • Consumerism is uncritical by design.

  • I go to the Supermarket every night looking for bargains and buy crap i don't even eat.

  • Op don't annoy Scotty .

  • Maybe not necessarily things that I needed but definitely what I wanted… at the right/best possible price.

And that makes me happy and happy is good for well being right?

Who do you typically vote for at state & federal elections?

Can’t speak for others, for me a definite no. I am an adherent to the cult of ‘Tightarse’ and make any purchase jump a lot of hoops.

  • For me no because I don’t blow money willy nilly.

I’d say it falls on a distribution like most things. You’ll have people who browse OzBargain and don’t impulse buy everything they see, and then you’ll have people who do buy a lot.

    Nope, not for me.

I wouldn't buy what I don't need but I browse with interest for those few things I need, seeking the best offer (lowest price). My quest/example: a brand new 9kg BBQ bottle (empty)

  • It's quite possible I didn't need the 3 leatherman I purchased.
