Air Conditioner Clean

Hi Ozb!

I've got 4 single air conditioner units in my house (varying ages - some stink), and I've obtained several quotes to clean the units, ranging from $89 per unit up to $239 per unit from an aircon manufacturer. I can't tell what the difference in the service is, with the exception of price. All seem to wrap a bag type thing around your aircon and run water and chemicals through it.

Anyone had theirs cleaned recently, what did you pay? Anyone reason why I shouldn't just go with the cheapest quote?

  • Did the more expensive one include cleaning the condenser as well as the coils maybe?

    • Quotes didnt say, I assume not…

An aircon tech in my local area did it for 80+gst ea, got 3 units done. I wouldn’t recommend them again as the overall customer service was average at best as got stuffed around. To their credit - it was very obvious 1 out of the 3 was clearly mouldy (visibly and by smell) and after the service it no longer had funny smell and visibly looked mould free too.

    • So what you're saying is the cheapest quote might be a bit cheap and nasty :)

      • No not really overall - the cleaning was actually good, but even just organising a time and date was very below average. Slow replies then 3 reschedules, bit stressful trying to arrange to leave work to let the guy in if he books in 12 noon, then reschedules it for 3pm arvo, then says hey mate I can be over in 15 all within the space of 1 hour.

    Suggest youtube and DIY.

    • As long as it’s not mouldy, this is what I would suggest too. Just vaccum the filters.

      • Youtube as well if it is mouldy, but it may need allot of work and you may end up dissembling the head unit to clean it.

Coles and Woolies have double strength vinegar for killing mould.

    • I have DIY quite a few times using a product called Mizu Foam.
You can tape a sheet of plastic under the unit to catch any drips, not much really, the waste goes out the drain.

  • All seem to wrap a bag type thing around your aircon and run water and chemicals through it.

Well basically thats because this is how you do it.

  • The company that did our aircon installation were offering to do it during the off season for $100 per unit where it's $150/unit during the peak season. Don't know if it's gone up this year. I guess we'll find out in the off season.
