PC Build/Graphics Card Suggestions

Hi,

I am buying my son some computer parts for his birthday, but haven't selected components for a PC build since Quake (the original) was released, so I'm looking for some advice/deals.

He already has a case, PSU, and this motherboard: https://www.umart.com.au/ASRock-Z390-Pro4-ATX-LGA1151-Mother…

CPU: Intel 8/9th gen, prob i5.

Memory: https://www.umart.com.au/product/g-skill-8gb-1x8gb-f4-3200c1…

SSD: Not sure what the deal is, I'm used to floppies.

Graphics card: no idea? Budget pref. under $500?
He plays AAA games like Destiny, GTA, etc. Screen is 1080p.

I would ask your son to investigate the options as he knows allot more than you do and will get the parts he wants. Give him a total budget and let him go for it.

Tell him he's dreaming. You can't even pick up an entry level 3050 graphics card for $500. They're in the $600-$650 range. A mid range card like the 3070 ti will set you back $1500-1600. The 3060 is a decent card for 1080p gaming, but it's still only a few bucks shy of $1k.

    • 1660 super. For around $400-500
1660 Ti going for around the same
      On FB market and gumtree
Picked one up for $400 1-2 weeks ago and many around that price point now

  • I have the Samsung EVO 970 plus M.2 (SSD) which I find to be pretty good. They are a little older now but I can't think of anything better that is still PCIe 3.0 (that motherboard doesn't support PCIe 4.0).

Honestly though finding a GPU alone to fit your budget will be difficult.

  • Skip buying a PC for Gaming, instead subscribe to GamePass and get an Xbox Series X.
…that's if you are really concerned about graphics and budget.

Otherwise, you will just have to accept the bad reality of the market. Where a previous high-end Gaming PC would cost under $1500, it is now instead costing above $2500. So you would have to cough up the money.

Maybe a compromised can be achieved for the meantime?
Like using an AMD r7-5700G processor which has a Vega-8 iGPU built in. You could use that for games that are exclusive to Windows, but mostly at a low-spec level. And supplement that with a PS5 for those exclusives, for mostly higher-end gaming. And if you happen to get lucky later, you could then throw in a decent dGPU into the PC. And you can always sell the PS5, that will be viable for at least 5 years.

  • I'm still gaming on a 8400 Intel I5 system OP, get a 500-1tb sata ssd to keep costs down I would buy an extra stick of ram and for a gpu it's an awful time to buy I would look on market place for a NVIDIA 1080 sits around the $500-600 range and will play most things on high-ultra on 1080-1440p settings still and pickup a cheap windows 10 license off eBay for $10 bucks
