Expansion and Contraction Sounds from The Roof - How to Avoid Them?

I recently shifted to new home with metal roof.
There is lot of expansion ad contraction popping noise especially at night.

Builder and few roofers told me that this is normal and cannot be avoided.

But I am thinking if there is a way to avoid them completely, it will be great as I am a light sleeper and these noises are affecting me a lot.

Any advice that can help me sleep will be helpful? :)

Go for a walk around the neighborhood and when you spot a house with an old gal roof and the garden looks old knock on the door ans ask if they have any pointers.

    • Agreed. There could also be a Udemy course on it if there doesn't seem to be any local knowledge base/tutors to help.

yes normal for a metal roof home with metal trusses. nothing you can do.

    replace the roof with tiles
sell and buy a new home with a tile roof
    ear buds
    avoid sleeping
    sleep in the morning

its the metal trusses. need timber trusses.

My place = metal roof, timber trusses/
Still makes some noise when heating and cooling.
        You get used to it.

        • Ditto, timber trusses & metal roof, still cracks and pops heating and cooling.

Mine's tile and timber and still makes noise. IME all places make noise at times through expansion/contraction of materials or the ground itself.

          • @apsilon: Same here. Everyone says the other type of roof is better. Fun games.

      avoid sleeping

      this is the way

      • You get used to it after a few weeks, I'm told.

  • first world problems.
have had a metal roof for years.
    It's part of the character.

Could plant a tree and wait 20 years for it to permanently shade the home?
Or chuck a whole lot of solar panels on the roof, shades the roof and doesn't get as hot.

    • Or live under the stars!

    • I have lovely trees shading the roof.
Now i have to clean the gutters way too often, and every few nights a 5kg possum jumps down from an overhanging branch and hits the tin like a sack of concrete.
      Then it gallops noisily across.

I'd take the creaks and groans!

Have a metal cliplock roof on timber trusses, not a lot of roof noise odd creaks or groans. Large birds with their hobnail boots are the worst!, I did install lots of insulation to assist in noise mitigation.

  • Sleeping tablets. or bottle of port before bed.

  • $50,000 new roof OR
    $5 ear plugs
Could also use whitenoise (or leave a fan / TV on)

Use sound to drown out the sound?

You could always try increasing or changing the insulation over your bedroom in your ceiling. I would suggest high density polyester. There’s also another product called Wavebar which is quite effective, you could roll it out in as many layers as it takes.

What type of roof profile is it? I find concealed fix roofs can be more noisy. If it’s just standard corrugated, you could always try to see if any of the screws are loose. Supposedly loose screws can be an issue, but not entirely sure how accurate that is.

  • I have timber and tiles still hear the odd creak and crack in the ceiling would rather that happen every now and again then a constant creaking fan.

Try white noise that could block it ??

  • Sleep downstairs.

    • there is no upstairs, so by default sleeping downstairs.

  • Thank you everyone for cool suggestions.
Yes, I am using white noise as few suggested. Using fan at night time.

I got a timber trusses with metal roof. Screws are not loose but it is definitely expansion and contraction. Don't have trees around, so it is not possum. I don't think they can climb that high.

@Frostface: Thank you, I will try to change or put extra insulation.

@7ekn00: If @frostface idea didn't work, then I will get $5 earplugs. Changing the roof doesn't seem to be a solution. :)

  • By the way, is it possible to block these noises if I can get someone to build a proper storage attic above?
    Just a thought.
