Buying High Value Item Interstate from Gumtree with PayPal

Interested to get a camera from interstate, $2,000+, if going ahead, will insist on PayPal (for products and services) and shipping insurance.

Just wondering if things go pear shape will I be reasonably covered?

Any opinions? There are other options locally but like $400 more, effectively paying 15-20% for hassle avoidance.

What’s your take?

I sell a lot of stuff on gumtree and fb marketplace and have shipped and posted things for many buyers. As a seller, I'd never accept paypal as it opens the possibility of the buyer scamming me.

Is it really worth buying a $2,000 item sight unseen and uninspected without a clear returns process? Consider dealing with someone locally for such a high value item as you can inspect it in person and perhaps negotiate so that it's closer to $2,000? Even paying an extra $200 or $300 would be worth it if you can see it in person and confirm that you're getting what you're paying for.

"I'd never accept paypal as it opens the possibility of the buyer scamming me."

This screams that you're a scammer, i bet you suggest bank deposit as well.

Why? It's a legitimate thing, PayPal usually sides with the buyer even with decent evidence… so if they run off with the item and the transaction is reversed later you're out of luck.

Also, bank transfers can also be reversed and should not be used on Gumtree.

      • You're correct, all my transactions have been made through bank transfer, so that I don't get scammed. Paypal always sides with buyers, so bank transfer is the safest way for sellers when posting items for gumtree sales.

  • Maybe there's a reason it's $400 cheaper locally. (The reason being you're about to get scammed.)

  • Just get a Sony A73 new for similar price, likely better sensor and features, zero hassles ;)

Interested to get a camera from interstate, $2,000+

If it even exists. Run away as fast as you can.

If you are prepared to lose $2,000+ and go ahead there's a better than average chance that you'll be scammed.

For that amount of money, it would have to be the rarest camera on the market, plus I'd fly interstate and check it out before parting with my money.

Haven't had a good scam story in a while, my vote is to do it.

    • While we wait for this one to cook, here is one we prepared earlier.

How do people keep posting this over and over and over again, are they really that many idiots on ozbargain ?

If you have to ask then you already know the answer is you are up the QLD creek with oars, but this will do you no good at the moment due to the flash flooding.

why would anyone drop 2K on a used camera without any warranty. Any issues you come across it's going to be expenisve to get quotes/parts depending on how old the camera it.

  • Do not do it unless you want to donate you $2k to some random.

  • The most I would pay on Gumtree is "Free to good home"

  • 100% quality guaranteed

Please buy and keep us updated op 👍
