CPU Fan Mounting Help

A kid’s old desktop has a cpu fan that is failing. I haven’t replaced a CPU fan this century, just used whatever was included.
The one to be replaced is a moulded plastic affair that has 4 legs holding in the heat sink that end in plastic clips that you push and rotate to plug into the motherboard (an LGA1150).
Looks a lot like this:

Before I place an order for the wrong thing, can a smart person confirm:
- if I order any old fan, will they all fit? Do the ones with screw mount feet have a bracket or something included?
- if I need to make sure I order one with the right size fittings, do they have a special name to check I am getting the right thing?

Any LGA1150 compatible hsf will work.
Most come with multi mounts anyway

You know the socket name so that's a good start for compatibility. The only other issue will be physical space constraints around motherboard and RAM. For small profile ones like that, pretty much 99% will fit fine. They come with additional hardware for different socket types too.

It's good to know the CPU itself too to ensure the unit has sufficient cooling power (most likely will be fine though if using stock cooler).

I would get this one personally in your case: https://www.mwave.com.au/product/cooler-master-i70c-intel-cp…

Copper heatsink core and much better build quality from highly reputable manufacturer. Plus 2 year warranty.

Edit: Oh and you'll need a stick of thermal paste when replacing cooler too. Alcohol pads/wipes to remove previous residue.

Thanks for the recommendation, I was looking at that one too.
I have some paste, but thanks for the reminder - it is my lot in life to be the guy who forgets to get the screws or the paste or the adapter whenever I am doing a little job, so I need to make a return trip to the store.

Or are you looking to just replace the fan on a stock cooler?

    • The one in the case is moulded around the heatsink, and pushes into place, no screws so can’t really just change the fan.
No problem, as it looks like a replacement unit is cheap.

main thing to do is to check the height within your case, that can be an issue on some heatsinks (as well as space around RAM).

Besides that, any socket 1150 hsf should do.

Video instructions on how to install a Intel cooler

The stock intel mounting solutions involve just pushing 4 pins into the motherboard (see video), since the sockets are all square shaped the CPU coolers for intel have pretty good inter-generational compatibility. (Read product description to confirm). an LGA1200 cooler is backwards compatible with LGA115x and vice versa.
