Received this e-mail from Commbank. Here's their equivalent page.

As a CommBank Awards cardholder, you can get:

  • 10,000 Awards points when you sign up with your Awards Credit Card
  • Amber’s Better Off Guarantee, which makes sure you will be better off with Amber than with your previous supplier
  • 12 months’ subscription free (usually $15 per month), for a discount of $180 on top of your savings with Amber

Basically 10,000 points, a guarantee you'll be better off (which I've called price guarantee in title), and no subscription fee for 12 months. Seems like a good deal.

Note that to get the better off guarantee, you need to stay with them for 12 months, then "send a bill from your previous electricity provider to [email protected] with the subject line CommBank customer guarantee and if you are eligible, Amber will credit your next month's bill."

They also install a smart meter for free - the only catch is if your house needs more work (i.e. upgraded box or electrical) then they'll organise that for you, but the extra cost you'll have to pay for without - though they do not place a markup on that service.

Amber is a retailer that passes on Wholesale Energy prices. In theory, this should work out cheaper, but you might need to use their app to monitor live prices and forecasts to make decisions about how you use your energy.

Switch Energy Provider to Amber for 10,000 Points

How much extra will your electricity cost you though?

    • I've been with Amber for about 18 months and it's definitely cheaper. Whenever its been higher than the state average we've received a credit.

      • My electricity bills are negative (as in they pay me). Will Amber guarantee I get paid more?

      • +2

Whenever its been higher than the state average we've received a credit.

I normally go for the cheapest provider, not one that aims to sell at the average price.

        • To clarify, we get the wholesale rate every 30 minutes plus a monthly service fee. Most months it's dirt cheap, coz, you know, it's Australia - there's plenty of solar hitting the grid. And when there's not, and the wholesale rate goes up and causes the bill to be high, their insurance kicks in and we get the average rate anyway.

TLDR; it's either cheaper or roughly the same as everyone else, and when you average it out it always ends up being cheaper by a good $30 a month in our case.

    • Good question

    • How do you know it will be extra?
      Could be less?

  • Probably blind, can’t see the mention of them installing a smart meter? Would those work in a strata managed complex? Aka A townhouse?

    • +1

I live in a townhouse that is strata managed and as long as they have access to your electricity meter, then they can install it.
They came around a few weeks ago to install and the contractor handed me the "certificate". From what I can tell in the app, I am paying less (YMMV).

    • I'm in a strata managed complex and Amber installed a smart meter here a couple of years back no dramas.

  • Can't see any mention of the price or feed in tariff? Not going to switch blindly…. on a pretty good plan as it is

  • +2

If they are charging cost prices i don't know how ReAmped make money as there rates are way lower the the rates Amber are mentioning and then you need to pay $15 a month extra.

Make sure you check rates here https://www.amber.com.au/pricing and compare to ReAmped. Although they credit the difference after a years its quite a but of hassle to chase it up and only for the first year.

  • I think amber doesn't worth if you have solar, their solar rate is low

    • +1

      How’s that work? There’s a mandatory minimum.

  • Worth to sign up for Ultimate Awards just for these offers???

  • +2

I have had a quick look and the the only charge that is not higher is their Daily Supply Rate at $1:08. Otherwise their usage charges are higher, their Solar rebate is lower. The 10,000 points equates to a $50 gift card,

The good thing is that they are quite open about solar:

👍 If you use more power from the grid than you export, Amber's likely to be a good fit for you.

👎 If you export more power than you import, you may be better off with a fixed retail feed-in tariff.

Precisely my thoughts too which is why I didn't bother posting eventhough I have got the offer mail a few days ago

  • Does not seem as cheap as reamped on average.

  • I used Amber for a few months around when covid hit and everyone started working from home. I had 2 issues with them:

    1) You'd get these craaaazy price spikes at times. From memory it was up to $15/kWh. Amber would send a notification and I'd have to turn everything off ASAP. Of course it was usually at times when everyone else was using AC for a reason…

    2) There were times when I'd have to pay them to feed solar into the grid.

From memory it may have worked out maaaarginally cheaper but overall I found it wasn't worth the hassle of the extra monitoring required.

  • Warning - the T&C's do state that to be eligible for the better off guarantee, you must have received the offer directly from CommBank.

You wouldn't want to need to call on the better off guarantee and be refused because you hadn't received the offer from CommBank.

I know that I haven't received it, and I'm an rewards customer (and I probably wouldn't be better off, but would be interested in trying it out just out of interest, but not if I'm at risk of being told too bad so sad).

  • Yeah with solar origin is better for me. 15 feed in not 5 cents. And good prices and 23% discount.

  • Any cheap credit card to take advantage of this offer?
