Mobile Phone Security

What is the best app for security when going on the internet on an android mobile phone.

  • You could try Droid VPN or other alternatives

VPN essentially puts your device into a secure connection with a dedicated server, which also encrypts your data that is being sent and received from your device. The upsides of a VPN is its high degree of security — the downside is that internet traffic going through VPN's have to make a round trip to a server that may be located overseas (USA for example) before coming back to you. That means web pages may take a little longer to load.

Droid VPN is currently free (and in beta testing), however you need to ROOT your Android phone before it is usable. Most if not all VPN apps on the Google Play market need Root accesss.

    • Of course a VPN only stops people viewing what you are doing, and even then in limited circumstances. Mostly useful if you don't trust your telco or government. Of course it is possible to sniff WCDMA without being the telco, but for most people this is not a consideration.

    • What kind of VPN does Droid VPN use? What kind of cryptography? I guess what's worse than no security is trusting on a badly implemented security. Does it let you connect to your own VPN server (OpenVPN for example)?

  • What security? Against malware? Against theft (physical)? Against people with physical access to your phone being able to use it? Against local (wifi/bluetooth) attacks? Against internet attacks? Against police/government monitoring?
