How to Store Vaccination Certificates for Tourists?

Hi all,

Now that Australia is opening up for tourists, I will be receiving some overseas relatives in March. I think at that time some shops and most restaurants will still require customers to show their vaccination certificates. I am just looking to ask anyone who knows.

I usually just open up my phone and show the digital certificate that I had saved into the check in app from Medicare. What about tourists? Obviously, they don't have Medicare or a mygov account.

Do they just keep a paper copy in their wallet/purse/bag? Or a pdf on the phone is also generally accepted by shops/restaurants?

  • Covid is old news now, russia taking Ukraine is the current issue.

Can't say I've been asked for a vaccine passport anywhere I've gone.

Not sure where you have been, but I was asked just last night entering a restaurant, and that is generally the norm when I eat out.

Really? Is this a QLD thing? I ate out in Sydney yesterday, no masks, no check in, no certificate.

        • Could be, but most eating places still need to see my vaccination certificate before I am allowed in, the ones I have been anyway. The only eating places I know of that do not ask to see your cert are fast food and takeway places.

No check ins anymore, masks are due to come off 4 March for most indoor places with some exceptions.

Not a thing in Sydney any more (certificate as of mid December, unless asked to e.g. theatre companies; masks and check-ins as of this month in retail)

Yes it’s a QLD thing thanks to Palash*t.

      • Plenty of cafes, cinema, bowling, etc etc. Zero questions.

You might be right, I am not arguing that.

But it a a genuine concern for me, my relatives are here for a limited time to "see" Australia, I just want to avoid the odd chance that they were refused entry to somewhere because they didn't have the correct proof of vaccination.

        Vote with your wallet.

Boycott shops that won't let you in without a pass and reward those that want your đź’µ.

Same, been eating out all week in SA, never asked.

    • I haven’t been asked anywhere apart from restaurants. Hogs Breath.

It’s still mandatory at restaurants in Melbourne. They checked mine last night.

      • Not surprising in Melbourne though.

    • There’s a few places still asking. Currumbin wildlife sanctuary and hakataya ramen have asked to see it recently. It is the minority asking now around here.

    • Covid is old news now, Russia taking Ukraine is the current issue.

Nope. Old stock, all of that.

Floods in the eastern part of Australia is the big news now.
      You know, rain …

When we had trouble downloading to our check-in app, we just downloaded to a digital wallet so it was easily available.

Otherwise carrying a paper copy should suffice.

    • Yea, I am thinking a backup paper copy is probably the way to go. Based on what I have read, digital certs from overseas covid apps should be ok? Not sure, maybe I need someone who actually checks people's COVID certs for a living to confirm.

    Frame it.

Download as a PDF, onto phone if all else is too difficult.

I've been carrying my drivers license for 20 years now, really they should have just let me go after 2 years because I was really good at carrying it for those two years!

It's a bit of paper, assuming you're vaccinated is it really that much of a hassle? And if you're not vaccinated you're not getting into anywhere that asks anyway, so it's hardly voting with your wallet at that point.

If you have been licensed for 20 years, that makes you older than 26, assuming you haven't been suspended so many times you're still on a probationary license, then you do not need to carry your license.

So your silly little comparison is actually irrelevant. The mandates are over. No one cares anymore. Some never did.

        • Today I learned something, thanks! I've turned around and gone home a few times because I forgot my license. Amazing that I get pinged out the wazoo for forgetting my myki but proving I can drive a car? Nah, all good mate.

You do need to present it in 7 days if ask though.

If the mandates were over, what is the comment I'm replying to complaining about? Seems like some people can't give up on their complaining about covid restrictions and seem a bit disappointed that there was no conspiracy to control our lives.

          • @freefall101: You're welcome. Mandates might be over, but that doesn't mean (Soup) Nazis won't voluntarily institute the policy.

And if you're not vaccinated you're not getting into anywhere that asks anyway

Yes you can, it's incredibly easy if you want to.

  • Google Pay.

  • Print out an non resized version of the original cert. Try Google Pay/Apple wallet

  • Buy an iphone for each family member, set them up with a telstra plan, and pre-install the app the stores the certificate on each one.

  • All international travellers require a International Vaccine Certificate it’s different as it can be used overseas and each country has their own app to scan these VDS-NC certificates. This is Australia’s

I believe that in order fir a visitor to travel to australia, they must already be fully vaxed, so by default it should be assumed they have a minimum of 2 jabs.

  • What do their vaccine certificates look like? Are they in English?

    • They have the vaccine cert in the official app in their home country and it is in English.

  • My visitor carried their certificate that they showed when they flew into Australia. When asked at restaurants during check in, they looked at it weirdly because they haven’t seen it before, but then accept it. Some places look at it carefully and look for certain words in the document.

    Photo on phone, simple

Paper copy, pdf on phone, any any official apps their home country may have.

    • Copy that. Thanks.

  • Just boycott those outlets.

  • You can save them to Google Pay or just show them in whatever app they normally use in their country, or a paper version. Staff will soon work out its OK when they hear a foreign accent and figure that's why they're not using the Medicare app.
