Wordle - What's Your Strategy and Is It Successful?

As you know, Wordle is the hot game played around the office.
It's fun to play, great when beating your colleagues, (cheating is easy)

What are your starting words?
Do you have any specific strategy?
Does it work?
Any caveats/weakpoints to the strategy (like double-letters)?

And have you tried Quordle (quad-wordle) variant?

For an alternate method, you can try to eliminate as many consonants as possible.

    Is that you devs?

  • No strategy, just deep thought.
Thanks for the link to quordle, that's much more challenging.

If you like that one, then give Nerdle a try.

      • Nerdle seems to be hard at a glance. I was surprised to find out it's easier than I thought, so far for over two weeks now I managed to find the answers in 3-5 guesses.

        • Needle requires me to think a little bit more, but I found it easier also. I typically get it on the third try, sometimes on the fourth. But I did have one instance where I barely got it on the last try. It's also a bit quicker to do, on my limited Tea Break. Thanks for the suggestion.

        • Just as an update:

I'm fairly new to Quordle, and find that more challenging than the standard Wordle.
I tried the other variants, but not too fond of it since they don't fit on my phone's screen as neatly.
With that said, I have experimented with Quordle and sometimes lose on it by getting only three correct guesses and mixing up the fourth. More usual than not, I get all 4 correct, but its much more tight with only 1 or 0 tries left.

I found using TARES, CRANE, or (TONES URIAL), as the starter words to give me some mixed results. Same goes for (GLYPH CRWTH) but perhaps a bit more useful to knockoff those consonant options.

I only just came up with a new tactic today, and only tested it once.
Since you have to guess four words at once, and you get 9-tries, I tried to have a bigger Starting-Words. So I tried to do a 5-Word-Starter, but its a very rough tactic. Basically, you cannot make a mistake as you only get one try to guess each of the four words correctly. It means you get two words easily in one guess, and the extra help from those makes it medium-difficulty to get the third word correctly. But the fourth word is high-difficulty. I think a better option might be a 4-Word-Starter.

But here was what I came to find:
          GRAMA, POUFS, BELCH, WIDTH, CONKY

…anyone willing to experiment with that, and see how it goes?

  • I play CRANE as the first word because I saw a headline recommending it. This hasn't been helpful since the NYT bought it, though today's word it was helpful. I wonder if they are deliberately choosing words where CRANE isn't helpful now. I have tried Lewdle but I've found some of the words are ones I have never heard of.

I usually do ROAST or ARISE

          • @BewareOfThe Dog: Just as an update:

For regular Wordle, I have experimented with the new tactic:
            GLYPH
            CRWTH

…as the two new starter words. It makes it really difficult to guess it on the third or fourth go, but more easier to guess it on the fifth and sixth go. The gist of this new tactic is trying to come up with words that use up as many consonants as possible, so that your later guesses become easier to come up with words using vowels.

I haven't lost with it yet, but came very close a couple times. I think its a good tactic, but since you're limited in your tries on regular Wordle, it is not as optimised as using the TONES URIAL tactic I came up with earlier.

    • +3

People keep saying the NYT changed the words - but they haven't. The source code is the same except for some possible offensive words.
You can look up the full list of words posted on Jan 17 - 2 weeks before NYT announced their purchase and if you scroll to the last few weeks, you'll notice all of the words are the same, even up until today.

But to answer OP, I usually play RAISE or ARISE. Then if that has no hits, POUND.
Never play the same dead letters twice and keep an eye out for words with double letters.

      • +4

It may sound counter-intuitive but playing a dead letter can be helpful to discover others. It's a cost that needs to be weighed against the other options - not often good value but sometimes it really is.

        • +2

If you know the letter isn't in the word then how is it helpful to play it again?

          • +2

@AustriaBargain: If you're really down in the dust, it's sometimes useful to play a word with a single dead letter just to suss out what other letters are in play.

  • +3

    1st word is ROUTE
    2nd word is PAINS

That way you've covered all of the vowels, possibility of a plural ending in S, and checked high use consonants N, P, R, S, T.

  • At first I was just winging it.
Pretty average player usually getting it on the last go, and sometimes losing. I heard of people making tactics, and having a "starter word". I tried a bunch of different words, and it did improve my odds. Anywhere from AUDIO, to ADEIU, and the one I kept going back to was STEAR.

Then I went autism-mode, and using the above links and some statistics I deduced the best starter word.
It is TARES with about 10k matches, about the physical limit of 11k.
My odds improved quiet a bit, and I was consistently getting the word on the 4/5th try, and not losing too much.

But then I went even more autistic further.
And I tried to come up with a 2-word starter strategy. LOUIS EARNT was my first attempt and found it by chance. My odds actually increased. I found TARES INDOL but it isn't as effective. And then after a weekend of doing more statistics, because the position of the letters matter, I improved it. The combination I found has a total 14k matches, out of a possible 16k. I hadn't lost a match with it, and consistently have been winning on the third/fourth try, probably a fluke. And so the combination I found, which I think is (one of) the best strategy is to go with (cue drumroll) is:
    TONES URIAL.

    BUT…!
I haven't had too much success with it on Quordle, and I read some place, that my tactic is possibly flawed. Now I'm not sure entirely, but the argument went something like this: you already know it is likely to have E A I O U vowels, and probably a popular consonant in S T R N L. Save those letters. It is hard to think up words with only few of those letters. Instead mix them in with your guesses, because the aim is to knock off as many consonants as possible.
    A) So I could either use One or Two words which are full-consonants….
    B) Or I can come up with a new system. Perhaps having a crazy four-word-starter which divides the common letters with as much consonants as possible.
    C) Whilst someone suggested try thinking about the pattern of words (like ending in ES, or LL, or TH, etc etc), and use that to come up with effective starter words.

    ….What are your thoughts?

    • +19

Here's a thought, don't use "went autism-mode" or "went even more autistic" to describe things, unless you're still in high school, and even then, don't.

Thanks for the advice. It may be offensive to some, and the nuances doesn't translate well on this medium.

        • +1 for taking the comment as intended. I think you're letting yourself off the hook a little with the 'Oh, but you can't tell the nuance on here..' style comment (it seems to imply there's appropriate times to saying this) but ultimately everyone is responsible for the way they present themselves to the world, so if it's become part of your chat in other circumstances, you do you.

Just remember, you're "lucky" to have someone call you out on this and present you with an option to explain yourself, it's the decision makers in your life who notice these sorts of comments and silently alter their behaviour that will come around to get you in the end.

    • Could you explain what you mean by 'autism-mode?'

  • +1

Used to play it, don't play it now that NYT bought it out and jammed it full of advertising trackers.

    • +2

I managed to download a copy of the original game according to instructions published on the Web. Based on the code I made up two number guessing games based on the same game played by Aussie primary school kids. I put a collection of 6 games together here - Wordle clones. Number 1 is the original Wordle game you can play.

      • Doing the lords work, my friend :) Here, have an upvote.

And have you tried Quordle (quad-wordle) variant?

    How about sedecordle?

    • It's like wordle, but you solve 16 wordles at once

…why are we here, only to suffer?

  • +1

I do Wordle before breakfast as a warm up, then tackle Quordle after. Quordle can be tough and just since the time I started last week I have come across words I didn't know like caput (head like protuberance) and junto (political grouping)

  • Let's hope this is a good omen for the rest of the day

    Wordle 254 2/6

    ⬜⬜⬜⬜🟩
    🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩

  • Today I got it in 3 steps. My best. No strategy, I just start with whatever word springs to mind that day.

PIOUS first, YEARN next and based on the results of PIOUS.

Isn't part of the fun coming up with your own strategy, rather that copying others? It is not like you win money

Personally as a word and scrabble nerd I find it quite easy without any specific strategy. I try and use a new starter word every day to make it more challenging and use hard mode (which actually makes it easier in my opinion as you have to use words that could be the solution)

  • +1

    My strategy:
    * Start with GREAT
    * Many words have a vowel in the 3rd or 5th position.
    * Many words start with a blend ("TH", "CL", "ST, etc)
    * Try to get the vowels in the correct position first. This helps to sound out the word.
    * Other than the starting word, I don't choose words based on the statistical probability of letters.
    * Avoid dead letters or placing yellow letters in the same position.
    * Try to sound out the word based on the letters that are in the correct position.

    • That’s great, thanks.

  • +1

I prefer to not follow a strategy so that its always a fresh look at what's available and what words might fit. On another subject, if you like crosswords, especially cryptic crosswords, I recommend trying semantle. Its addictive, infuriating and ultimately very satisfying.

And have you tried Quordle (quad-wordle) variant?

    Why stop at 4?
    octordle.com

    • Why not have a layout of 4x2 instead of 2x4. Makes it much harder.

      • For posting on social media would be the reasoning

Apparently SOARE is the best starter. I haven't lost a game yet. I haven't looked at the word list but I believe they don't use obscure words which is something you can use to your advantage. If you can't think of a word then double letters may be involved. This helped me figure out one of the words which was VIVID - pretty hard with a double V and double I.

  • +1

I use a different starter word each time, with no strategy. Just whatever I feel like on the day. Since I started playing I've completed every game, but I only have a 51 streak as I started late. I've never gotten the word in the first or second try though. Mostly four attempts according to my stats.

  • I'm late to the party, so only about a month of games. 100% strike rate and don't have a first word (change every day based on what comes to.mind) but definitely never repeat a dead letter.

Goal is to get a word by dumb luck first go. 10% strike rate on 2nd guess.. all I want a hole in one to really annoy the Mrs, who hates the fact I'm better at Wordle than her!

  • I usually just start with any word with two vowels involving A and E. If I get none of the vowels, then I will something with the remaining vowels…

  • For those who are interested, here is where you can run the original Wordle and the current nytimes version - link.

    There is also Heardle

  • Humble brag: I got todays Wordle in just two steps. My recent strategy is to always start with the word SMART. Worked well today.

    • Nice.
My coworkers and I've started experimenting to make it harder. We try to use only sexual or obscene words, like horny, btich, fcuks, stiff, cream… it's a little inappropriate, but funny to our imature brains.

  • Did someone say sedecordle

    • How does that variant work?

Also as an update for the most optimised Starters:
      Best 0-Starter:
      Best 1-Starter: TARES
      Best 2-Starter: TONES URIAL
      Best 3-Starter: THOLE, MURID, SPACY
Best 4-Starter: WINDY, BLACK, POUFS, THERM
Best 5-Starter: WIDTH, BLACK , SPIFS , NERVY, KOMBU (duplicate i and s)

…Alt 5-Starter: WIDTH, BELCH, POUFS, CONKY, GRAMA (duplicate o and a)
