  • The wait continues for Detective Pikachu Switch and Pokemon Sleep.

It's a shame. The Detective Pikachu game which game out prior to the movie was fun

  • Might be the first time I don't choose a fire starter

What is the gameplay like for Pokémon Scarlet and Violet? The trailer looks like the sort of game I have been dreaming of since I was a kid - a normal 3D platformer where you can go anywhere you like instead of 2D top-down. And you can catch actual Pokémon running around not random encounters. And battles are real-time with you running around as the Pokémon doing attacks, not turn based. But that's probably too much to hope for isn't it.

Pokemon Legends is closer to that than this, but still turned based battles.

Thanks I'll have a look at Pokémon legends

      • But this game looks like Arceus…. or unless I am missing something given the youtube only came out this morning.

        • They didn't really show any of the sneaking, dodge rolls, just throwing pokeballs without battling (the website says - battling against wild Pokémon in order to catch them unlike Legends where you don't need to), Game Freak called Legends an action-adventure game while that aren't calling this that.

@sss333: I see. Then Arceus would sound more enticing then.

  • I must admit I am a late entrant into this Pokemon thingy (thanks to my kids) but I am finding the whole Pokemon battle is a bit ridiculous.

Level supremacy almost has no impact if the right pokemon type is used. That is, if you have a Level 60 Ninetales (Fire type) is attacked by a water type level 34 pokemon, your Ninetales would die (Strong Style) in one hit. Because of this, there is no incentive to keep a permanent roster / lineup (that is, my 6 pokemon lineup will constantly change) and thus, no incentive to level up because you can always catch stronger (Alphas) down the track anyway which gives you ridiculous level.

The other thing is it is possible for your enemy (only your enemy) to attack you 3x before you have your (first) turn. This is why I would prefer a FF7 / Tales of Arise type of battle where there is absolutely no chance this sort of anomaly to occur.

But Arceus my God, is beautiful. Unless BOTW2 comes out, this will do.

    • PLA has a very very different battle system, its a first iteration and honestly isn't very good, It is action order based whereas the rest of the series has been a turn based RPG.

I am sure if they continue with the Legends series then they will improve the battle system over time but its not terrible for a first iteration in trying something new.

This new game looks to be Gen 9 and should have the normal turn based system, which is a lot more fair and actually built with competitive PVP in mind.

      • Oh don't get me wrong. I don't mind the action based. In fact, Octopath Traveller is also action based I think but in PLA, you can actually see who's going to move next based on your strategy (say Agile, can mean you move 2x, Strong can mean they can move 2x) but the problem is say you picked up Strong (means enemy can move 2x) and then when it becomes their turn (after your first Strong attack), they activated Agile and suddenly they can move 3x and you are effed.

Actually I like Arceus a lot, just the battle system is weird. The same with other Pokemon games like Sword and Shield, level supremacy is basically pointless.

        • What I was saying is that PLA has a very different system and its a first try at it so its obviously not very good.

Hard disagree on the Sword/Shield system being bad though (apart from the gigantamax mechanic, which is trash and banned in competitive) The normal Pokemon turn based system is brilliant and has been fine-tuned for decades. Level supremacy is certainly a huge factor in damage output as levels determine stats, of course type advantages are a thing though otherwise highest level wins every time which would be a ridiculous mechanic.

          • @freoleo: Yeah. Gigantamax is another story to tell.

Type advantages certainly is good but when a level 34 can defeat a level say 60 or 70, I'd say something is wrong. I don't know. My kids play Swords/Shield and it's not too obvious but for PLA, it's effing obvious.

Agree PLA needs a bit finetuning and being first iteration, I'd say good job.

Anyway good to hear fellow players' opinion here.

            • @burningrage: Yeah PLA level 34 can for sure beat a 60 to 70, I have no idea what they've done with stats in that game, they completely reworked the system, its broken as a battle system IMO, lucky there isn't much battling.

A 34 beating a 60 to 70 in Sword/Shield would be very uncommon and take a specific build or a terrible player at 60/70 to happen, the stats are balanced alot better in those games and a 60/70 would overpower the weaker Mon.

  • Burried at the bottom of this post is the launch of gen 9, which is the biggest news for years, a fully open world Pokemon game with no random encounters.

    • Seems to just be posted in order and and this point we've had multiple games with no random encounters.
