      Best before not use by.

I am still drinking XXL ones that were best before 14 December .. still tastes like coffee :) the standard 10 pack capsules ordered around the same time are good till July.

It's just best before, not like you are buying these for the taste anyway

I know someone who takes three pods to a single cup. And drinks multiple cups per day. One single pod a day sounds like rookie numbers.

AFAIK, these Nespresso sized pods (eg. the L'OR single pods) usually contain around 5-7g of coffee. For reference, most cafes would be pulling 20g+ doubles in your coffee, unless otherwise specified.

So 3 pods per drink is really not outlandish by any means (about the same or less coffee as a regular coffee at a cafe)…although at that point, I might question the convenience (and probably even cost) of pods vs a regular coffee machine! (From an environmental / waste perspective, it's not even a question, tbh!)

Don't get me wrong - I'm not suggesting that pods don't have their (environmentally unfriendly) place in the world. We have an Aldi Expressi machine, and bought my parents one of these L'Or machines. Just saying, if you are making 9+ pods a day, every day, it's probably in your interests to think about buying a proper coffee machine! :)

        • I would have thought they would add three times the caffeine to the pods compared to normal coffee, or whatever. But I guess I haven't really put that much thought into it. George Clooney uses just one pod in the ads so that's what I do. But I know people who will want three at once. And maybe I should do that too instead of drinking three times as much milk.

@AustriaBargain: Nah, they wouldn't use more caffeine or anything - 7g is just the standard specification for a single espresso in Italy. So that would be why pods generally use around that amount of coffee. It's probably what you would get served as an espresso in Italy.

It's just that in Australian cafes, a double shot of 20-22g is standard (20-22g is not twice 7g obviously…the world of coffee can be very confusing!).

Anyway, FWIW, when I use a pod machine, I use 2 pods. On my regular coffee machine (Flair Signature), I pull 15g shots (15g in 30-35g out, which could also be called a "double" lol), so 2 pods is probably closest to what I normally have anyway. YMMV

In terms of milk: I would suggest picking your desired milk:coffee ratio, and sticking with it. ie. If you use 1 pod, use X amount of milk, if you use 2 pods use 2X amount of milk. As opposed to just filling the rest of the cup with milk - because then the strength of the drink will differ wildly! Unless of course you are intentionally aiming for a strong/weaker drink as desired (in which case, using the same amount of milk with 1 or 2 shots would work, or pulling 1 or 2 shots and filling the rest with milk.) So just depends on what you are trying to achieve: consistent strength of drink regardless of how many pods, or changing the number of pods to change how strong or weak your drink is.

At the end of the day, coffee is all about ratios! :)

            • @caprimulgus: What grinder do you use for your Flair?

              • @Fobsessive: I upgraded from a Smart Grinder Pro to a Niche. (Had the Weber Key come out a year earlier, I probably would have ponied up for one of those!)

Have also pre-ordered the Argos from Odyssey Espresso, which should be coming later this year (current estimate is April).

                • @caprimulgus: That's a big upgrade with grinders! Did it make a big difference with shot timing and quality?

Hope the Argos is a worthy upgrade after the Signature!

                  • +1

@Fobsessive: Yeah, the Niche is definitely a step up! I think the SGP is great value for money, and does a respectable job for the money, but the Niche is certainly better, even paired with just a Flair.
