2 Tablets for Kids

Hello! So I need 2 tablets for school ages kids. I need them to be relatively NOT crap but we can't afford ipads, also that be overkill anyway. I was thinking of something like the Samsung Galaxy 8.7" Tab A7 Lite BUT I'd like to be able to get them under $200 each. Just wondering if anyone has any ideas! Maybe somewhere that would do a good price if I buy two? EDIT kids are early primary age

    School age = 6 or = 16?

    • Sorry early primary!

  • Subscribe to Samsung Galaxy 8.7" Tab A7 Lite so you will be alerted when deals are published. Historically it looks like it has been under $200 often.

    • Great idea thank you

What year group are your kids OP?

If the kids are in late primary or starting high school, a laptop or an iPad would be much better suited and needed than a Samsung tablet, even a $400 - $500 laptop would be better.

If the kids are in early primary school, then a cheap Samsung tablet for some educational games and apps will be fine.

    • Sorry yes I agree - early primary :)

If they are needing them for school you will definitely want Apple Ipad.

OP may have a shortage of $$$.

Kids at that age can be a bit rough, so screen breakage etc is fairly common.

      iPad 64GB starts at $469 + a heavy duty case. UAG = $79.95

      • Yes exactly. Full life story the eldest had an ipad mini 5th gen, and it got dropped in a puddle and fried and now I just can't bear to spend that much again!

        • Yikes that's painful!

Check with the school what apps they need to run. It would be silly to spend $500 on tablets that can't do what is required and then have to buy iPads anyway.

Have a good think about the Chromebook Duet and keep a look out for deals

I bought mine a couple of cheap HK 10" tablets for about $130 each and both lasted a couple of years before bootlooping and other issues, and weren't great from the start. The Lenovo is good, Chrome gives 8yrs updates, and it'll run every Android app etc

We tried sending our oldest to school with a Lenovo Chromebook. While cheaper and just as capable for what was required for school, the support from the school for devices other than the iPads which most other kids had, was non existent. While kids in the class could help others with iPad related problems, issues with the Chromebook meant that issues could take half a day while while waiting for IT to come to the classroom. The schools ability to provide help should be a consideration.

Lenovo M10 FHD Plus 4Gb/64Gb refurbs go for around $200 on Grayonline auctions pretty much weekly.

  • I used to buy my kids android tablets/ipad minis, but as soon as they drop it the screen would break (after 3 broken tablets, no more)
They now get our hand me downs phones every time we upgrade. So one has a samsung S7 and other has a samsung S9.
Get them the cheap rugged cases on ebay and they wont break.

i also bought my wife that 2021 model Samsung Tab A7 lite its really slow to be honest.

This is actually quite clever, I hadn't thought of that, thank you!

      • Not clever at all, they are not tablet and your kids eyes will say thank you in long run.

      • That was when they were little kids.
Now they are in primary and secondary they both have a desktop PC each now lol.
Also bought the latest ipad this year for the Year 7, it was a requirement for school.

    • iPads (and iPhones?) seem to break easily for some reason.

Solely from my real world observations (so not at all scientific).
But so many of my friends and aquantances with iPhones have cracked screens, compared to only a few with Android phones.

My kids treat their tablets pretty rough. EVA Foam cases work a treat to protect them. I can't recommend them enough.
The first iPad in our house had a cracked screen (cause unknown) within 6 months of ownership despite it being in an EVA Foam case similar to those that have successfully protected our Android tablets for 6 years with no breakages (including one Android tablet going for a quick swim in the bath!).
