Fractal Design Ion Gold 850W 80+ Gold Fully Modular ATX Power Supply $118.80 + $5.99 Delivery ($0 SYD C&C) + Surcharge @ Mwave

550

Hmm maybe someone's conspiracy theory is correct as to the next gen Nvidia high-end GPUs requiring more than 850W power supply to the system. This is another Tier A 850W PSU been discounted by MWave today, the asking price was $179 yesterday. Fractal Design is very well known for their computer cases, but not so much for their PSU like Seasonic or Cosair, but this is still a Tier A PSU according to: https://cultists.network/140/psu-tier-list/

1%/2% surcharge applies for select payment methods.

I just hope the pcie gen 5 power plug can be used with an adaptor (powered with 2 or 3 8pins)

    • Are you gonna buy 19 of them? lol.

  • Might be a sign Fractal are releasing a refreshed or updated product in this segment.
They recently updated their Ion+ Platinum line.

Could also be Mwave just purging stock because they no longer want to carry a little known product. The Ion+ Platinum v1 was carried by lots of retailers but the updated version is now only stocked by 2 (Scorptec and PCCG).

High Power is the OEM for this PSU

I feel like the more I read PSU reviews the more I feel like I shouldn't buy anything other than a Corsair RMx lol (I already have 3 in the house).

Looking at Tom's Hardware Review (Aris), compared to other tier A PSUs, standby power consumption is double, caps are not 100% Japanese, and transient response for the 3.3V rail is supposed to be bad (5.72% deviation). But then you read the same test for a MSI A650GF at 4.97% deviation which is supposed to be mediocre. Is this something to be worried about?

    • I finally bought a corsair 850w psu. Cost $180. So happy I did now and didn't do for a cheapo.

2022 and we still have surcharge…

    • I work for a SME merchant - at these rates they are probably already subsidising you. But yeah some business may choose to up prices by 1% instead ¯_(ツ)_/¯

      • If you shop around a bit you should be able to beat these rates, provided your volume is high enough. Banks, as annoying as their platforms are, can give <1% fees (Visa/MC only) without having to send too crazy a volume their way. Haggle, most of them are hungry for more transaction volume so they'll budge to get another merchant on board.

Depends on the market segment though, if you're in a high fraud risk industry you'll get bled by all parties.

        • You have a good point, for their size Mwave ($200m+ revenue/year) should have credit rates around 0.75% and debit rates around 0.45% (Graph 5, RBA, 2020). But at the same time it's not legal iirc to charge more than the actual service charge, so I think it's possible that Mwave itself pays 1%+.

  • Fractal Design or the Gigabyte one?

    • Fractal, it has better design and some heatsinks. 3x pigtail pcie cables vs gigabyte 2x pcie cables.

  • I've got a 750W Corsair RMx V2, but going by the rumours of next gen GpUs I may need a 1000w PSU so I'm holding off until I know more about next gen power requirements.

  • is it better than Corsair RM850?

    • OOS now.
