[PC, Epic] Free - Cities: Skylines @ Epic Games (11/3 - 18/3)

4560

Next week’s freebie from Epic games. As usual, available from 3am AEDT.

Cities: Skylines is a modern take on the classic city simulation. The game introduces new game play elements to realize the thrill and hardships of creating and maintaining a real city whilst expanding on some well-established tropes of the city building experience.

This week's freebie - Centipede: Recharged/Black Widow: Recharged/Dauntless Epic Slayer Kit DLC.

I stumbled across this in my library the other day, I think it must have been a free game previously. Installed and played it for what I thought was an hour or so, turns out it was 8 hours later. Haven't played it again in fear of disappearing

    • +2

Yep I picked it up in the last freebie. This and Frostpunk are the only two from these Epic deals I've been playing with any consistency.

      • +3

Hey I just finished the first scenario for Frostpunk this week 'cos I have to isolate. Had me up until the sun started to rise. Even on Day 50 I was still a little confused about what I was doing but it felt damn good having some of my little guys survive

    • +4

Just one city had me going for about 100 hours. It's a great game. You can choose to focus on new things all the the time, like universities, sports, zoo, etc. Add on packs are cheap if you look at 3rd party sites

      • +3

Clarification : steam add on packs are cheap if but through 3rd party. Can't speak to epic code cost

  • +2

Good game. I have it via here already but the DLCs are too expensive for epic. So I purchased it for the steam store from a key reseller qnd I can get cheap steam version DLCs for ot

    • +1

Yep, there are probably three DLC packs that are worth picking up for the game, best to pick them up from somewhere like G2A for Steam. Plus nice & easy modding via the workshop..

      • +1

        Are G2A trust worthy?

It feels pretty marginal between someone dodgy like those guys and someone who is authorised like GMG?

        • I've purchased heaps from them. Never had a issue

        • I've probably got 30+ transactions on there, all good. They're just run of the milll third party resellers.

  • +1

How does it compare to Sim City? Played SC for hours on end.

    • +10

Much better by most accounts and I would agree. You can get to the level of traffic management, government policies etc which is to say nice mix of the macro and micro level of detail. There's many YouTube reviews but I'd strongly recommend picking it up anyway.

      • +3

Yeah there's so much scope to focus where you want. With the right mods, you could spend a year refining traffic management. And it would be interesting!

      • +1

Cool I can pretend to be Putin or Chairman Xi

    • +4

Worth a free download. Beautiful looking city builder. Greater size maps (with mods) than sim city, and enormous flexibility in the way you build a city.

Downsides are that you will need to buy DLC to unlock all the features (although I only play the vanilla game, and that's enough for me). Also, while there is a huge mod community creating assets so you can customise your city, I feel that the actual economic engine behind the game is a little too easy….meaning that after a while the challenge is more in designing the city to look like the city you want, rather than managing the economy of the city. Think model railways, where creators fine tune the aesthetics of their build after they've got their tracks down. I don't know much about model railways but this is what it looks like to me from the outside.

Having said that, the traffic management and transport management is good fun and complex, which is not surprising since this game grew out of a transport simulator. I've spent hours trying to get traffic flow optimal in my cities.

Although I think in some regards, SimCity 4 is pretty timeless and lives on strongly through the modding community, Cities: Skylines has more or less become the spiritual successor and proper sequel that SC4 deserved. SC2013 was a travesty so just forget that ever existed, haha.

I know that some of the big mods that SC4 had such as the network management mods have now been redeveloped for Cities: Skylines and live on through there.

      • This is the post I was hoping for. Thanks!

came out on psn/psplus and every 2-3mths comes out as a 'free' game lol

  • +18

Game was released in March 2015. Base game is free but will currently cost you $326.27 to get all 34 paid DLC packs @ Epic Games.

    Free DLC packs
Cities: Skylines - Carols, Candles and Candy
    Cities: Skylines - Match Day
Cities: Skylines - Pearls From the East

Trial it on Epic. But look for a steam sale and as always ITAD is your friend.

      Mods are essential.

Each DLC adds more RAM requirements to the base game. If you activate most of them then its 16GB bare minimum. The loading screen mod helps reduce this.

32GB is more comfortable with this game. Going all in with DLC, mods and content its 64GB RAM

      • +1

64gb just for vehicles to use 1 lane instead of 4 lane

  • +1

Great news, missed it last time, think was in Dec 2020

  • +1

i've waited 3 years for this day

    • +6

      Its like $7 on steam

      • Where did you see it for $7, my steam app says $42.95

        And mods are $18- $21.50

        Am I doing it wrong?

        • +3

Pick it up off G2A.com, it's about $10. Mae sure you buy a global steam key and activate on steam.

Mods are free (via the workshop) and there are excellent mods around — I'd just have a look at the most popular lists or City Planner Plays' lists. Heaps of good mods as well as awesome assets.

For DLC, also buy this at G2A - ~10AUD or less each. Industries, Park Life, After Dark & Mass Transit are winners but I'd suggest just picking mass transit or industries to start.

Edit: Green cities DLC also has bike paths. Would rate this above After Dark.

    • +3

it's been free many times since then

  • I have this game installed via Steam on my Windows. It's an amazing game. Does it anyone know if the Epic version can be installed on a Mac? My girl friend is asking if she can enjoy this freebie.

    • +1

windows only. but get it anyway, maybe you can convert her at some point

What Sim City should have been

    • Came to say exactly this. RIP SimCity that absolute shambles of a "game". (profanity) EA.

  • +1

    Terrific game!

And the mods you can get are awesome too!
You can control traffic light sequences, directions, smooth road joining (when there's different levels or weird angles) and a stack of other ones that make the game even better to play.

Just install all the "all time favourite" ones… whether you like to micromanage a city to the smallest detail, or want a smoother self managed option where you can just concentrate on building your metropolis, the mods you can get make this game a must own. Love it, one of my all time favourites.

And people have even gone to the trouble of making a stack of unique buildings too… both special buildings and differing varieties of standard buildings, so your city doesn't look so familiar everywhere.

  • This game is EPIC. Need it on PC rather than Ps4

  • I bought this game 2yrs ago for $7X.

You can scam your citizens with park entrances

    • I think its already the case with our national parks and parking

  • Back to $34.95

    • +3

@FatsWaler This deal has not been started. Please refer to the title, from 11-18 March.

      • +1

        I need glasses!!

  • +2

Please don't buy this game. You won't see your family or kids for years.

  • Trying to add to cart on mobile but it's on a CAPTCHA loop.

  • Does it works on a mac?
