Help Me Decide Mower/Line Trimmer Option

Hi OzB

Can I ask you advice for buying lawn mower and a trimmer

Have a small front lawn and nature strip 60m2 in total (Kikuyu)

Don’t have any batteries from either (only bosh blue 2a x 2 and Ozito 2a x 2), it’ll be entry to a ecosystem.

It appears when buying mower + trimmer, the price is very similar between Ryobi v18 ($725) or v36 ($828) and Makita (v18 Line trimmer via redemption, $809). I think Makita makes more sense and steel deck (only concern is the storage and the weight as it does fold up like Ryobi/ego). Ego ($799) is also an option (need to sell the blower and get the trimmer though). Any one used any of these? What’s your thoughts?

Would Makita or Ego or Ryobi 36 be too much fir the size of the lawn (60m2)?

Or better off with Ozito (Mrs was quite surprised when I told her est prices..)??

Ryobi v18 $725

Ryobi v36 $828

Makita $809

Ego $799

Any advice will be much appreciated! Thanks!

Edit: Thanks everyone made suggestion. I had a look on all listed items and went with Makita option because:

Ryobi v36: Too expensive (this was the most expensive option O had). I could not justify spending same money to better quality (my opinion) gears like Makita/Ego.
Ryobi v18: TBH, this was the finalist due to the size/weight, range of tools (and their prices) can be stored vertically. However, again the price stopped me similar reason to Ryobi v36.
Ego v56: I Need a trimmer not the blower which add additional selling/buying process. And did not like the poly construction.
Ozito: I had Ozito trimmer which is broken and had to return. Didn’t like the ergonomic of the tool.

Did first mow today with DLM464, very happy with the the finish, power and cutting width.

I do ~250m2 of lawn with 18v Ryobi, had them ~2.5 years now. If you're not looking at getting other tools (like drill etc) then I'd say it can't hurt to go 36v even though I've been happy with 18v. If you may look at other tools then the 18v may make sense. Ryobi has the longest warranty (assuming the 26v is the same 6 years as the 18v).

    Consider
    * warranty type: Is it swap or repair? The latter means you don't have your tool for a while.
    * Range and usefulness of other tools you might get in future

If you're patient and cheap, Ozito puts out a ~46cm steel 2 x 18v mower every now and then as a promo item. OzB thread for the last one.
I've no idea why they don't make it a normal product, but anyway, I can confirm the 2nd most recent iteration of that is great - used mine again just yesterday.

That's usually ~$400 with 2 batteries and charger, and then you could grab this trimmer which I also like. They're probably not quite as good as your options, but it's only ~$555 total and still good enough for most people.

Otherwise if you can't wait, I'd go with a 36v Ryobi mower and not worry about the rest of their crazy expensive 36v lineup. Go 18v with whatever brand for everything else.

There’s an 18v brushless ozito. I don’t see any need to go to 36v or steel deck for such a small lawn. I’ve been using a 36v ryobi with a plastic deck for a few years and it’s fine. I have around 280m2 of lawn though, so want a bit more power and run time.

      • Agreed steel deck isn't important, I only mentioned it because the steel deck versions are the only Ozito mowers with decent cutting width, which does matter even for small-medium lawns like mine. That mower you linked only cuts 30cm, mine does 46cm - so I accomplish in 20 laps what that would in 30.

I also think 18v would struggle with longer grass, given how much my 36v slows down. Depends how diligent you are with regular mowing - I am not lol.

    • What you have is what I want to get. I'm currently waiting for this to come back into stock (Bunnings said June/July): https://www.bunnings.com.au/ozito-pxc-2-x-18v-cordless-lawn-…

Will then pick up the line trimmer you linked and maybe a blower too.

The mowers sell used on Facebook marketplace all the time here in Victoria.
        Keep an eye out.

  • So you have ozito batteries? Get ozito skins. It’s only 60m2.

  • Steel deck is a huge negative in my eyes. Went from one to an EGO with poly deck, great move.

You have Ozito batteries already so have a good look at that.

I have the 47cm self propelled EGO mower, plus brush cutter, blower, chainsaw etc… great kit, best battery tech of the bunch.
But you already have a foot in Ozito and that can save you a good deal of money.

  • Usually a couple of times a year Ego has a promo where you get extra batteries. You could bide your time and wait for that offer to come back (it does recur quite frequently)

Buy a petrol-powered Honda and be done with it.

Not for 60m2. Petrol is not necessary for such a small area.

      • Yeah, could easily be done with a manual push mower. I used one for over 10 years on my block that's 4 times that size and wasn't until a few years ago where I had an injury that just wasn't healing that I moved to the electric.

        • Yep second a push mower.
I had been using one for about 4 years on a similar sized lawn. Doesn't require much more effort than an electric mower.

The ozito mower I ended up buying was unnecessary… But I love power tools so got it.

  • I bought the $199 Ozito pack that comes with 36v mower, trimmer, and 2×2A batteries added another 2x4A batteries for $99 and blower for $59.
It all feels cheap and plasticky but does a great job on my back, front and nature strip (around 150m2)
    Going battery is life changing

  • Another brand you could consider is Dewalt. They have some great products and might be considered if you have any of their power tool range.

  • I have the ozito 2x18v brushed mower. It's plastic deck but works well for similar sized lawn.
Picked it up used for $70.

I have the ozito grass trimmer too. Also works well but won't be able to do any serious scrub, just grass and weeds

  • I have the Ozito 36v steel deck (not the latest model). It does a good enough job, but my one big grip is that it doesn't cut low enough, even on the lowest setting. I even bought an online, 3d printed, adaptor to lower it another 5mm. Don't get me wrong, it cuts the grass okay, it just doesn't go low enough to leave that nice freshly cut look that I like..you know, those mowed lines in the grass. I'm going to attempt another mode to lower it even further by drilling out a new slot for the height lever.

I'm guessing this was a deliberate move on the designers part to avoid people mowing long grass on the lowest setting, and therefore laboring the electric motor and causing it to overheat.

    It's really the only negative.

Positives are, you can install 4 batteries at a time and it will automatically switch over to the other 2 when the first 2 are depleted. I have a big lawn of over 400sqm and get around easily with the 4 batteries (they must be of the same amps though). It also has a large catcher which is easy to remove and empty and it does a good job of throwing the grass to the back of the catcher.

Got mine on Gumtree for $150 (no batteries).

    • I don’t get the idea of 36v with 4 batteries. You are carrying 2 extra batteries that aren’t doing anything the whole time. Be different if it could access extra power from the additional batteries, but it doesn’t. You still need to empty the catcher, what’s the harm in having extra batteries in the shed to go get them when needed?

  • Yep, they're just along for the ride until needed. You don't have to do anything when the first 2 are depleted, the reserve pair just kick in automatically without you even knowing.

  • I went with the 36v Ryobi line trimmer after reading reviews that the 18v wasn't quite powerful enough for some. Don't have experience with any of the mowers however. Very happy with the 36v, but there's definitely a price premium when buying other tools in the 36v range.
