    Pretty average deal.

Probably why dealbot gave it away. He likes to tell people to credit him because he thinks it makes certain people mad…. somehow.

      • +1

I guess so. Still waiting for 15% off gift cards or the deal with 2,000 FB points on the $50 cards.

  • +1

The $50 Restaurant Card is hard to use the full amount.
I have several cards left, with 20c, 3c, etc

… and that's how TCN make extra money off you! That, plus the fun associated with finding a restaurant or cafe that has the correct merchant category code (MCC) and is willing to allow split payments…

      • +4

Sucks how Visa took away their merchant finder that listed MCC codes making it easier to find participating businesses.

    • Can you explain the issue?

      • +6

There a couple of reasons why I would not buy a category-restricted card such as the restaurant card in this deal:

        • You can only use the restaurant card at a merchant with a specific MCC (Restaurants & Eating Places). The issue is that sometimes you’ll go to a restaurant or cafe or eating place that does not use that MCC for whatever reason, and there’s no guaranteed way of knowing before trying to use the card whether it actually works at that location. One time, I was with a friend at a cafe, and they were trying to pay for our meals using a card that could only be used at Restaurants and Eating Places, but when they attempted payment, they kept on getting errors on the EFTPOS terminal. My friend eventually paid using a regular bank card, and when they called their bank later on, the bank explained that the MCC for that cafe was a bakery. I’ll be honest and say this doesn’t happen a lot, but it can crop up from time to time…

        • If you have 20c or $2 left on the restaurant card, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a restaurant or cafe or food outlet that will allow you to redeem small amounts or allow split payments. In my experience, allowing split payments is the still exception rather than the rule, and I still see some places enforcing a minimum spend for EFTPOS (e.g. $3). Even if you find a place with no minimum EFTPOS spend and allowing split payments, you’d probably still feel a little like an idiot for asking to redeem 20c on a single card… Then there’s the issue of some places still surcharging all EFTPOS payments (even EFTPOS Savings/Cheque), but I digress…

'like an idiot for asking to redeem 20c', cannot agree more.

@simon 84: I usually just ask if they happy to let me clear my balance on a gift card. Most are fine, a few might object to it.

        • Also some restaurants won't take it when you select savings, but have no problems if you load onto your digital wallet (Apple/Google Pay).

I'm in the same boat, have 4 card with balances <$1 and haven't had the chance to use them up.

Macca's do allow split payment but will have to pay remainder in cash, which is probably inconvenient for most.

Once again time to buy myself a gift card ☺️

  • The her card used to have jbhifi
    Is it removed ?

    • +3

      Nope.

If you go to the TCN website, it still lists JB Hi-Fi as a participating retailer for the HER, HIM and HOME gift cards.

The issue is that the list of participating retailers in OP’s description is incorrect for the HER, HIM, HOME and BABY gift cards. I actually have no idea where OP got their list of participating retailers from…

  • Some of these gc are 10% off at woolies this week

    • Yep, got myself HIM cards for a JB s22 pre-order. Instantly activated and could convert to JB GC on their website as soon as I got home.
      here it is
Ends tomorrow. Should still be plenty of $50 & $100 stock given it's less well known.

  • This is like 10% discount right? Except in the form of woolies points?

    • This is Coles

      • Oh right, so 10% discount in the form of flybuys points :) thanks for the correction. Thanks!

    • +3

If you get a $50 gift card, you get 10.5% of the gift card’s value returned to you in the form of Flybuys points.

If you get a $100 gift card, you get 5.5% of the gift card’s value returned to you in the form of Flybuys points.

Those percentage figures assume you convert your Flybuys points on money off shopping (e.g. Flybuys Dollars). If you instead opt to convert your Flybuys points into Velocity Frequent Flyer points, it’s harder to make a judgment on the value of the Flybuys points, as a Velocity point’s value depends on how you redeem it.

Btw, if you are wondering why there’s an extra 0.5% in the figures I provided, it’s because this deal is for 1000 bonus Flybuys points. That means you’ll earn the bonus points on top of the 1x standard Flybuys point you earn on per dollar spent on third-party gift cards at Coles everyday.
