Phone That Can Run WhatsApp in India - Budget below $50

Doing another favour for a friend don't ask.

They are looking to buy 2 phones that can basically just run WhatsApp I assume they will only be using Wi-Fi/internet to communicate with the phone and my friend will be taking it to India on his next trip to give to someone who he knows there (yeah don't ask the logic).

Budget is under $50 as I don't want to get caught out if they forget to pay etc but I know that these people always break their stuff so really trying to just look for a burner phone for WhatsApp I s'pose.

Budget: $50 and below

Requirements: Run WhatsApp

Location this will be used in: India

I will be basically looking through https://www.ozbargain.com.au/tag/mobile-phone until I find something but if anyone has seen something cheap at Auspost or other place let me know so I can just order it and be done with this new task asap.

Thanks again all OzB.

Sounds like the family from Parasite. In any case you'd think your friend would be better off buying a phone in India instead of Australia.

    • It is complicated and yes you would be right but what I always tell myself is imagine all those people that helped me along the way in life.. now they might have not needed to do it or couldnt do it but they did.. so I try help when I can if I can.

Plus this is an og call aka grandfather connections so gotta answer the call.

Thank god they not asking me to build them a pc at least.. ordering a cheap mobile phone is not that big of a deal..

Just gotta make sure the one I pick fits the bill which in this case is just run whatsapp and I assume maybe youtube and email.

https://www.woolworths.com.au/shop/productdetails/63375/tels… so far looking at this it is $59 and by the looks of the photos it can run whatsapp from my guess.

Can combine some grocery out of this delivery so not a total lose lose situation.

But yeah I owe this friend a lot and they are basically good family he has done a lot for me if we were to compare apples to apples so really this is nothing but repaying goodwill and karma.

Yeah I would tell them to just get it in India where this would be much cheaper but again these people can cook they can clean do gardening and a bunch of stuff but anything to do with tech and it is like us trying to code the back end of a python or ruby server with all the manual instructions and comments in russian/cyrllic so if I can help them with my skills then I am happy that is my good deed for the day/week/month/year/etc.

      • Those phones are total ass. If this friend is like a brother to you then you shouldn't set them or their family up with a lemon like that. Though if it's just a friend of theirs this phone is destined for then it probably doesn't matter.

        • I am going by instincts here I have no idea what they need and I am guessing neither does my friend.

I could go get them a refurbished samsung galaxy s7 or similar for under $200 or something even less from kogan or ebay maybe.

Yeah I know these are pretty bad but these people I feel are total luddites when it comes to needs no disrespect but really all they do is actually just talk and chat and whatsapp maybe some youtube.

          This should do all that.

They are not gamers at all.

They might not even use chrome on it.

If they do need something better they will let me know and I hate being wrong and buying twice but I want to not over shoot this one and then realise they are just going to sit on it or drop it and lose it worse.. I know these people they just stick their hand out and are happy with whatever works.

          Beggars can't be choosers.

Unless there is some donation service for mobile phones for seniors and disabled people I don't know about.

This looks promising going to do a gsm compare now to see if the $10 more is worth it.

          https://auspost.com.au/shop/product/telstra-essential-smart-…

$49 from auspost so $98 for 2.. i wonder if there is a discount going around

ended up just getting the auspost one.. hopefully it fits the bill otherwise they can just try sell it and find something for their purposes but now its out of my hands so im off the hook yay back to gaming

@AlienC: Those phones are locked to Telstra… they won’t work with an Indian SIM without having to pay extra $$ to unlock…

For $50 you can buy much better phones in India that are native to their network and software support. Why bother.

  • <50, just look for coles & woolworths catalogues for specials

Budget is under $50 as I don't want to get caught out if they forget to pay etc

If they're good friends, get them better phones. If they're shit people asking for a "favour", just say no.

    • If only I could.

What if they are in the middle?

  • Look on amazon India, put that price and you will get results. There delivery is very fast and safe. I bought a Oneplus phone for a family member for $700 and there was problem with speakers, amazon swapped the phone and shipped new one within 1 week. Or just buy it from physical store.

  • Look at Flipkart or Amazon India. This price point is underserved in Australia but you should be able to find quite a few options out in India.
