LPG Discount for NSW Pensioners

Hi all

Does anyone know how this works? According to Service NSW - Apply for the Gas Rebate (retail customers) pensioners can have a gas rebate however when calling Origin Energy for my mum they said they don't offer it.

And then there's another type - Apply for the Gas Rebate (on supply and bottled gas customers), not sure what the difference is

Thanks!

  • This may be a new thing, as I did sales for AGL a few years back and pensioners could only get a discount on Electricity then.

Call Origin again and you may get someone who knows about it, if they don't tell them about your first link. The 2nd link seems to be for bottled gas customers.

    The first link states -

The NSW Gas Rebate helps NSW households cover the costs of their natural gas.

In NSW gas supplied via pipes in Sydney is natural gas.

The second link is for bottled GAS, which is LPG.

https://www.originenergy.com.au/wp-content/uploads/Applicati… - you can apply using that

Sounds like the person you go on the phone wasn't particularly well trained.

    • Thank you. I spoke to 2 people, both were based in the Philippines, perhaps didn’t get all the right training. I ended up calling service nsw and they said the form (from 2nd link) could also be used, but I’ll probably use the origin form first to see how that goes.

      • I also didn't realise you can add it straight to the Origin account too, but I don't know how that's processed. Details here - https://www.originenergy.com.au/pricing/concessions-rebates

        • You can for electricity, but LPG with origin is a different department, it doesn’t even appear in the same account

        • That link states -

          Concessions and rebates
Discover the concessions and rebates for electricity and natural gas bills that are available in your state.

          • @Baysew: The second link is for bottled GAS, which is LPG.

    • What sort of gas has your mum got - normal piped natural gas or bottled LPG?

      • LPG 45kg. The form that freefall101 shared doesn’t mention any gas type, not sure if it’s for LPG or natural gas. Wish Origin would make it more clear

        • Does she even get a gas bill from Origin if she has bottled gas?

Apply through the 2nd form for Service NSW.

          • @Luo18740: yes of course. How else would she pay if she didn't get the bill?

            • @macr0hard: I have never lived in a house with bottled gas. But I assumed the owner would buy and fill the bottles themselves.

Are you sure she actually has a gas bill from Origin? If so, call them again. If not, use the Services NSW form.

              • @Luo18740: They usually work on a swap basis.

You have 1 (or ideally 2) LPG bottles, and you call up the supplier (in this case, Origin), who send out a truck and supply a new bottle.

              • @Luo18740: oh i see where you misunderstood. It's her house, not renting so the bill is in her name. She basically missed out on years of gas rebate because we've only discovered this recently :(
