Which Is The Better OVHC (Overseas Visitor Health Cover) for Australia?

Hello.

My in-laws are visiting Melbourne on a visitor visa (sub class 600) around 20 March 2022 from India. They have Health Insurance 8501 requirement in their visa. Hence I am looking to get OVHC (Overseas Visitor Health Cover) for them in Australia. I don't want to buy OVHC from India since I think it will be hard to claim later (if required).

Do you have any advice/experience on which OVHC cover will be better? I don't think there are many providers of OVHC in Australia at the moment those satisfy 8501 requirement. I can see Australian Unity and Allianz Care.

Any help/advice will be appreciated.

Thank you.

  • Have a look at nib.

    • be careful with them last time I checked they gave you quotes and once you commit to buy it turned out they didn't offer it to visitor visa, and I fell for it twice over a few years apart so they apparently couldn't bother updating the info.

  • Thank you everyone.

  • Allianz

    • Allianz had it for sometimes then drop it for some visa categories (600 included). Not sure now.

  • Medibank used to have decent one, their rates is usually higher than other and you'll have to pay upfront for the entire period, but they're very good with refund unused portion. Not sure if they've changed much. As I said before check carefully with all of them because a lot of OVHC policy only cover for certain visa categories and not all tell you this until you go all the way to the end (after payment and they start requesting addional info).

  • Two good options covering 8501 condition depending upon circumstances:

    1. Allianz basic cover hospital and ambulance only.
Buy seperate for $104 monthly per person. ( hospital excess $500) if they’re healthy and fit.

    2. BUPA for $342 monthly for couple includes GP, specialists and other tests(100%MBS). Please check they may have cap on paying GP visits in a year or so. Hospital excess $250. This cover is better if they have health conditions.

Do check waiting period for pre-existing conditions and other exclusions or inclusions.

  • Thank you everyone. Finally bought BUPA cover which costed $342.10 per month for couples. This includes GP, blood tests, x-rays etc.

    • Do understand that anything pre-existing will not be covered, which means for elderly people with any medical condition, and which you expect can cause problem in their travel period will not be covered. E.g A person with known heart condition will not be covered for heart related problems. But yeah if they get a new kidney problem it may be covered. This makes OVHC mostly useless in my opinion.

    • HBF is offering for 301.55$
