Mobile Speed Cameras and Motorbikes

I'm on my Ps and went past a mobile speed camera van in the ACT this afternoon. I slowed down as soon as I saw it but I'm positive I was speeding while in its view. I assume they can only take pictures of the front of a vehicle so I should be okay ?

Ride/Drive within/at speed limit, then no need to worry about such incidents.

They take pictures of the rear (in nsw at least)

  • They also film out the front

  • Just wait by the letterbox, you'll find out soon enough how its done.

    • Problem is, I'm moving states in two weeks.

So you'll be forwarding your snail ??

Just wait by your new letterbox, you'll find out soon enough how its done

        Don't worry. They'll find you.

So, you reckon that you were above the speed limit after slowing down, and hope that you don't get pinged?

No sympathy for you from the ambos who scrape up the remains of people like you and the cops who have to go and tell the loved ones.

    None from me, either.

      I was at maximum 70 in a 60 zone.

So you were above 70 before you slowed down? So 20-25% over would be a safe assumption?
You deserve all you get, hopefully you learn through your pocket if not through your head.

Apprently no one in this sub ever speeds or has ever not paid attention and looked down to see they were over.

@leftspeaker2000: Nah. We're all perfect here, especially jv ; )

          • @leftspeaker2000: Saying you had to slow down and even then you would be going max 70 in a 60 zone means you are inattentive and were more than likely doing 80+ when you saw the camera car. And you are still meant to be learning, you dont even have your full license yet.
But ok, speed, slide off under a truck, give others less time to react because you're 20-30-40ks over the limit. Limiter bash because someone thought they had more time to get in front of you, didnt see you around that blind corner in the 60 zone (and thats why its a 60 zone), smash their mirror like all the other biker heroes of the internet, just because you think its ok.

          • @leftspeaker2000: Experienced drivers, sure - but you're on your P's, dude.

@ThithLord: I'm on my Ps for my motorbike but I have held my open licence since I was 18, I'm 35 lol. The reason why I'm so worried, is you only have 4 points on your licence when on Ps for motorbike. So, if I lost it, I would lose my full licence. I don't generally speed, and it was not like I was pegged over the speed limit. I was pulling out from a round about and changing lanes so I sped up, turned around and then was a was a mobile speed camera looking right at me.

              • @leftspeaker2000: My mistake, I saw P plates and assumed car/teenager.

So the camera was pointing towards you as you drove past, or away from you? I don't know how likely they are to capture the rear number plates.

And if you were 10km/h over and slowing down, you'd get done for 1km/h - 10km/h over. How many demerits do you gain there, 1? 2? Max you can gain is 4 and then you lose your license?

                • @ThithLord: ahaha its all good. I would assume the same that I'm some punk kid posting about speeding.

It was towards me. So back towards me.

Yeah prob 1-2 and you have 4. I never had a speeding fine which is good and if I got one now I'd be annoyed. Also moving state.

                  Thanks for your reply :)

Actually, you have zero and can only gain a maximum of four. You gain demerit points, you don't lose them.

@leftspeaker2000: people who don't ride don't get it mate, don't bother.

when i'm riding i have my head flicking from side to side to watch out for all sorts of danger. i try to keep my eye off the speedo as much as possible.

can i tell generally how fast i'm going from revs and gear and feel? yes of course, but i would rather know what's in front and behind me at all times than whether i'm doing 65 or 60 through a speed camera (if i have to prioritise).

obviously you try and keep an eye on it, but it's way easier to do the wrong speed (too fast or too slow) on a bike.

you end up getting that fine? also congrats on moving to nsw! i did sydney to cbr a few years ago, then back again. shout out via pm if you need any tips/advice on settling in.

@jrowls: +1 , happy to chip in and do a couple of rides if you're keen. :)

Ignore the holier than thou types here!

Apparently if you are involved in a crash at 60, silence would ensue but at 61, people thinks you deserve hell.

As if the law of physics actually dictated by speed limits.

Anyway, in VIC we can ask for a review (or pardon as I call it) if we are 10km or under speed limit. Maybe you have something like that.

And get Waze too. It might help you.

Weird, normally the ones with no time for people speeding get massive amounts of up votes. I was surprised these people getting negs

ur margin of error is a lot less in a motorbike than in a car

  • If you think they’d set up cameras that can only take pictures from the front and risk missing out in all that motorbike revenue you are likely mistaken.

If I was building a speed camera setup it would make sense to use radar and camera out the back, but to complement it with forward facing cameras to check the rear plates as well.

  • Was on my brightly coloured bike, with a high viz vest. Sunday. 11.30am. Bright as it can get. Sun above us, so no light in anyone's eyes. Approach a small roundabout on a side lane. Roundabout is empty.
    Stop.
Only traffic is car on the left about 5 seconds away. Clear Right & front. I proceed to enter the round about, keeping an eye on the car. I cross the first exist. The car is picking up speed. I slow down almost to 3-4kmph. She just blitzes past me, no care, no concern. Claims she didn't see me after I pulled up next to her. If I kept going, I wouldn't be here now. Thanks to 'defensive' riding and riding like I'm invisible.

Everyone needs to grow up. Speed does kill. Along with in-attention and distracted car/truck drivers. So get off OP and just share the moment.

@OP - I'm in NSW. I've asked this question before. Never got a straight answer. Would be best to ask NSW Police.

    • Much appreciated, I just moved to Sydney. So far, no fine has come to the ACT.
