Pokemon Trading Cards Where to Go to Get Cards Graded and Is Grading Worth It?

Hi Ozbargainer, I wanted some advice on card trading.

My son has been busy in his playground at snack and lunch trading with the other kids at school and has collected quite a nice assortment of Pokemon cards. some of these are ultra-rare and rare cards and in surprisingly good condition. Now he would like to sell some and I suggested we get them graded first.

Is Grading worth it? Or just try and sell them as is
If Grading is worth it, then where do people go? We live in Melbourne
How can someone tell if the cards are fake? There are lots of rumors of fake cards at the school

The only grading that's well recognised for Pokemon is https://www.psacard.com (based in USA) - It's pretty expensive & takes weeks so you'll need to cherry pick really valuable and worthwhile ones. There are aggregator companies that batch together for bulk grading for cheaper but that takes months.

https://www.trollandtoad.com/ is a good source to lookup approximate values (USD).

Anything played about with kids hands is unlikely to be a 9 near-mint or 10 mint grade so isn't worth it.

Agree with Hybroid, a card in a 9-10 condition means like it just came out of the booster pack and in a sleeve condition; if your kid has been bringing them to school and showing them around to his friends, it definitely won't be worth the money to get it officially graded.

The likelihood of your kid ending up with a bunch of genuine rare and ultra-rare pokemon cards from swapping cards at school lunch breaks is extremely small.

I saw in the news that a card sold for like a million dollars. If your collection has 100 of such cards in them then that's like 100 million dollars. That's the kind of money that can widen your dating pool for the rest of your life.

    • You would have to have been collecting in the 90s to get good money. I don't think even a shadowless charizard is worth that sort of money, probably like $1000 at best

But as others have said, if they've been in the hands of kids you're in trouble. Probably the only cards worth grading are the top 10 or less in a set.

  • Awesome thanks everyone I won't bother grading them, and just try and sell them
