Upgrade to iPhone 13 Mini or Switch to Android?

Hi All, been struggling with this for awhile, whilst I don’t want to start a iPhone vs android debate, thought I’d ask you all for recommendations.

Currently using an iPhone 6, which is cracked (piece missing) around the home button.
Basic use, browser, email, fair bit of youtube (which ob uses up the battery quick).
I like the size, fits in my pocket, so considering iPhone 13 mini, due to battery life, but price seems ridiculous for my use.

First mobile was a huge Nokia back in the mid 90’s, so not worried about switching back from iPhone, but with so many different Androids available these days, I have no idea what to consider.

Not sure what other info to provide, other than unlocked (byo), currently using Boost $240 for 12mths, unless there’s decent options for a phone on plan these days, which didn’t exist back in the day.

Cheers!

I’d go the iPhone 13 Mini (Better quality compared to an android - more compatibility).

Compatibility with what? OP said their use will be browser, email, fair bit of youtube. Every Android will be compatible with that and will only cost about $200 for something very capable of those uses compared to $1100 for the iPhone. Nothing wrong with buying an iPhone if you will make good use of the features but for OP it doesn't make much sense unless money isn't a concern.

      • Over 80% of the profits from Apps occur on the iOS platform. As a developer, you have no choice but to prioritise that. On top of that, Apple's SDK is much cleaner and simple, and everything is much more optimised on the low-level and metal.

So yes, a $200 Android will do all that OP asks, and probably better than his iPhone 6.
However, a modern iPhone will still have an edge in that domain.

They announced a new iPhone SE yesterday. Same shape as the iPhone SE 2020 which is the same shape as the iPhone 8, 7, 6S and therefore 6 too.

Could look into that if you don’t want to spend a lot and you’re happy with the form factor of the 6 and you don’t need all the bells and whistles like Face ID (which IMO sucks) and a bezel-less phone? Keep in mind there’s no headphone jack.

Maybe wait for reviews first though. The iPhone SE 2020 was rated poorly for battery life, hopefully Apple improves the battery life for the new SE.

No, it has a poor battery life.
All three models: 5S, SE, SE22. It's the result of having a fast processor, bright screen, and tiny battery. I mean the SE22 will have better battery life than an iPhone 6, but that phone was designed to run Apps/Software from 2014. There's a big difference in App efficiency since then and now, especially web browsing.

So I think he should get a 13-series. They have large batteries and very efficient, the best they've done so far. It gets better if you turn off the 120Hz feature. So skip the SE series all-together, the only (logical) reason for that is the TouchID.

So get the iPhone 13 Mini instead. It's smaller, better, and lasts much much longer.
The next logical step is the iPhone 13 Pro, but if battery life is more important than the iPhone 13 is good too.
And if you can stomach the size, the iPhone 13 Max, has the best battery life of all modern phones.

No, it has a poor battery life.

It hasn’t been released yet so where did you see this?

Considering Apple probably saw that lots of people complained about the battery life in the 2020 SE I don’t think it’s implausible that they would work to improve the battery life of the 2022 SE.

I’m going to wait and see what reviews actually say before jumping the gun.

You mean skip because Touch ID is archaic or the only reason to buy the SE is for Touch ID? I still prefer Touch ID. I can easily unlock my phone if it’s on the table without having to stand over it and by the time I’ve pulled it out of my pocket it’s already unlocked.

Early reception for the 2022 SE seems quite cold, I would personally consider it because I am a die-hard fan of Touch ID and also because honestly, I don’t care about having the latest and greatest phone.

I mean buy it, because I think TouchID is superior to FaceID. And the majority of FaceID users have also said this. Steve Jobs (imho) would've never had the notch, and instead integrate TouchID in the rear logo so that it is always visible and functional. I also think he would've designed the Apple Watch to be square instead of rectangle, simplified it's UI, and removed the power button from the side.

As it should be. Apple did the bare minimum, again.
I preferred when they used their previous year (or two year old) phone as the new budget model by slashing it's prices, eg selling iPhone 4 on discount when the iPhone 4S released. Perhaps they could have gone even cheaper and followed that model.

There was no need for a new "cheap" model like the 5C, 11 and the 8e. I also liked when they had a more streamlined lineup (Small, Medium, Large) it just kept things simple. From the likes of the iPhone 5S/SE, 6/6S, and 6+/6S+. They should've stuck to that. So outside of the iPhone 12/13 Mini, 12/13 Pro, and 12/13 Max…. there was no need for more options like the "Base 12" and "iPhone 8e".

I used my time machine, and yes, the battery life still sucks. Just came to let you know.
What you can simplify this to, is that the old model was for 4G and the new model is for 5G. Apple had good sales and profits from this cheap model, and they were required to update it for people and businesses who want to get it but are split due to 5G connectivity.

You can note, that the 2020 iPhone 8e used the same battery as the 2017 iPhone 8 which is a puny 1821mAh unit. There's zero incentive for Apple to increase this, and actually an incentive to keep it small (so it doesn't cannibalise their pricier models, which have fatter profit margins). In comparison, the iPhone 13 Mini has a rather mediocre 2438mAh unit.

In fact Apple themselves admitted this, at 11:43. All the battery life improvement is the A15. There's nothing in there that makes the battery chemistry better, what they did there was a form of double-speak. And the biggest proof of all, is that they didn't even elaborate or quantify how much more battery life the new model has. So yes, it is better, but only marginally and since the old 8e battery life sucked, this one will continue to suck (but slightly less). And they want to keep it that way.

@Kangal: man, i get that they have had issues with battery life but for god's sake, you have NO idea what this battery is going to be like.

They haven't even released how big the battery is and the processors are far more efficient in their energy use compared to previous models

I actually reckon for the price and what you get, the SE 22 is good value

            • @bidam1: I'm with you on this. The 13 Pro Max beats every other flagship phone in battery life (by a significant margin). The battery capacity is a lot smaller than other phones such as the S22 Ultra 5G, yet it's still excellent due to that Apple optimization.

Wouldn't be surprised if they increased battery capacity as well in this SE22

              • @Zackeroo: I'm going to try to remember this thread, and I'll come back to it in the next month when we find out the actual battery capacity and real-world battery life.

As I said, I'm on the side of it's bad, but slightly better than before. As in its between the iPhone 8e and the iPhone 12 mini. If I had to make a guess, it will have 62 points on GSMArena's test, instead of the old 59 score. And as you know, that's pretty abysmal for 2020 (and beyond) standards, and more akin to 2014 (and earlier) levels.

  • Might be a bit jarring going to an Android after years of Apple. There were some good small Android phone suggestions from this previous thread, if you wanna take a look there.

Most of them definitely won't go up over the $1000 price range, in fact most of them probably are under $750, so if you want something a tad cheaper than an iPhone, have a look there.

Did you buy the iPhone 6 new, when it came out or?

The thing with an iPhone is, you're more likely to have it last for 4 or 5 years with regular OS updates. Also, did you buy any apps on your iPhone 6? These will transfer over whereas if you move to Android, you'll need to buy them all again.

If you're OS ambivalent I could not recommend changing OS - no way. Only move to Android if you have clear reasoning why.

The latest iPhone SE is a ripper of a unit if you are not fussed about "old" designs. Old designs are a serious non-issue but people get hung up on it for some reason. If I lost my current iPhone 12 mini for w/e reason and had to get another phone, I'd be jumping on the iPhone SE 2022.

    • The thing with an iPhone is, you're more likely to have it last for 4 or 5 years with regular OS updates.

Lots of people who update their iPhone for the next one every year; depends on the amount of money you're willing to spend. I know lots of people who get the newest whenever they come out, and some other people who are still using the X or a 7 or 8.

      • Your point doesn't negate my point, though? That's their choice to update their device every year, doesn't mean it wouldn't last? lol.

Personally, I use my iPhone until I need a better camera. My first iPhone SE OG (2016) I used until the iPhone 12 mini came out.

        • I wasn't disagreeing with you or calling you out, just providing a bit of my experience.

Did you ever experience any slowdowns with your OG SE? And did your battery life slowly degrade? Would expect it to drop a bit somewhat after 4 years of everyday usage.

          • +1

@CrispyChrispy: All good mate I wasn't calling you out.

I did experience the infamous slow down that Apple got caught using, but after that came to light I went to get my battery replaced. They just replaced the whole phone for me, no charge.

So I got a replacement when it was about 2.5yo. I just gave it to me my sister in law cos her phone died so we'll see what she thinks of it.

I was using an iPhone 6, upgraded to iPhone 8 (waiting for responses!) via Coles as a refurbished one from Boost. $269 or something from memory. Working very well for me.

  • 13 from a 6 will be a quantum leap for you. Do it, you won't regret it.

I am android guy…. but I say stick with what you are used to. Go with the iphone 13.

  • after a few weeks of use with the iphone 13 mini, i am a bit disappointed by the battery life. i find myself leaving it alone while at home and using my old android to browse the internet while in bed, and even then the battery still seems to be draining abnormally quickly. i turned off bluetooth, location, only have mobile data on and probably have less than 30 minutes screen on time over 2 days, yet i still see that battery going lower and lower each time i check the phone.

according to battery usage, browser is taking up 76 % of the battery

on a side note, it's remarkable how long phone batteries last when you just use them with wifi and have no mobile data / inactive sim card. my old android has a decent battery which usually lasted about 2 days of medium use before needing a recharge (could stretch it longer if necessary) but now it's easily lasting 3, 4, even 5 + without a charge.

  • Go for the new SE. Seems to cater for customers like you.

  • The mini is great. I would look for a 12 mini though unless you need the latest and greatest. You'll get it much cheaper. I think i last saw them around the 800 mark.

  • I'm still using an iPhone SE 2016. I do basic internet, email, some videos and music. Works just fine. I love the compact format. You can buy refurbed ones cheap online. I know this sounds like a ridiculous suggestion, but there is, as far as I can tell, no comparably small phone that would serve as a replacement without spending huge amounts on a mini.
