Budget TV Recommendations (50''-55") Likely Hisense - Budget $1000

Hi,

I'm looking for a budget 50-55" TV priced around $700-$1000.

I've searched the ozbargain forums (including specific models mentioned below), google, and youtube and was tossing up mainly between TCL (P725 or C725) or Hisense (A7G or U7G).

I started shifting towards the two Hisense models which sell currently for $800 and $1000 in the 55" variant. As far as I can tell the U7G is QLED so has the darker blacks, better brightness / nits / HDR. But I have also heard how the Aus versions of these TVs seem to be different and inferior than the US models, which are mainly being reviewed. On the ozbargain forums a couple people pointed out the U7G in Aus has an IPS screen (not sure about the A7G) but I don't know why that is worse than a VA panel?

Anyhow, hoping to get some recommendations and particularly curious if you think the extra price of the U7G is worth it over the A7G. I will ideally go into a store to see comparisons but not sure they will have those models to view.

TV will mainly be used for streaming shows / movies, and some gaming. The lack of HDMI 2.1 with 120hz is not a deal breaker as I don't see any AAA games hitting 120hz on my ps5 (remotely near 4K).

Thanks!

I went the 65" U7G a few weeks back. It just seemed to have noticeably deeper or darker blacks compared to the A7G. The A7G seemed distinctly grey by comparison in my local JB Hi-fi store. I'm happy with its performance.

    • Thanks that's good to know. Despite the supposed inferior parts in our Aus version, and possibly including the screens blacks/brightness, it sounds like the U7G is still noticeably better in that regard than the A7G. Shame they don't just give us the same version as the US. I'll have to try view them in a shop.

Keep in mind that Hisense is selling products in Australia with the same model numbers as overseas variants but with vastly inferior components. You cannot trust a review of a hisense product unless it was by an Australian on an Australian model.

    • Thanks for the article. That is interesting and frustrating. The uncertainty of that issue is what made me create this thread as I was a bit confused, but sounds like there is still no real clarity for features such as brightness / nits etc.

      • Yeah, sorry I couldn't give more useful advice, its probably one you will need to see in store to check for yourself.

        • Yeah I think so too. Thanks for the info!
