Tell me they're not selling tickets to a funeral

    • In this world right now?

Wouldn't surprise me in the least but I suspect they'll be free.

Is Rod Marsh getting one as well?

    • This is Shane Warne, why would that surprise you.

    • They are not selling tickets to a funeral - they are free.

Legend? A guy who played cricket? One of the slowest and least physically taxing “sports” on the planet. The same guy that was busted for accepting money off bookmakers? Tested positive to drugs and was banned from cricket? Cheated on his wife? Threatened a cyclist in Melbourne? Punched a hooker in the face (allegedly)? That same “legend”?

    • +3

Yep, that same legend who owned his mistakes, inspired many and amounted to more than a keyboard warrior.

      • +11

thanks going to try this in court

defendant: i just killed a guy, but i own my mistakes

judge: well because you owned your mistakes you're free to go legend!

You have to understand aside form the negatives, he was a key "personality" in the golden era of cricket. He would come to the field and change the game.

We can't deny he did some shitty things in life and the sport.

But it doesn't detract from the fact that there was a solid decade where most of the world used to tune in for the cricket on the weekend and this guy was a 'key' personality in that entertainment. Cricket in this day is boring as bat shit, but there was an era where all the major teams in the world had their 'personalities' and a competitiveness where you really felt entire countries were coming up against each other to battle it out on the field. In that era there were a lot of players in the cricket world that were very popular - some had integrity and some didn't have integrity but they all made the sport interesting. I would be sad with the passing of any Australian, Indian, Sri Lankan, Pakistani, English, South African, West Indian cricket legend - not to detract from the minnow countries.

On the morning I got the text that he passed, I was genuinely pretty upset at the news. I think most cricket fans from that era would be, even if they are sitting across the world in India, Pakistan or England.

Every sport had its era and that era had legends that made the sport what it was.

      He was one of them.

Every sports "star" is a legend when they die.

I went to school with one that died "a legend", he was an idiot that can chase a ball, barely string a sentence, hits women and bully those much weaker than him. Like so many others of his ilk, OD on drugs but was called a "heart attack" in the media. Just trash that happened to be on TV, so many real productive people who benefit society that die left unnoticed.

      • 100%.

so many real productive people who benefit society that die left unnoticed.

And this is the sad part of all this. A woman that dedicates her whole life to helping the unfortunate, the abused, the victims of violence, drugs and gambling is mourned by the few, all while a drug abusing, women beating, cheating, bribe taking, abusive, entitled "SpOrTz StAr" is hailed as a national hero because he could throw a ball in a wonky way gets a state funeral.

The first thing that came to mind when I heard the news was "This is a cocaine induced heart attack that will be just swept under the rug as natural causes". 100% he was in "Thailand" punching darts, smashing beers, hoovering coke and banging hookers. Not many other reasons that middle aged single white men go to Thailand for.

Legend and role model my arse.

        • +1

Wonder if cocaine and Viagra cause massive spike in blood pressure? Just askin'.

        • +2

Oh I had to look, it really was Thailand. Yeah, really no reason to go there other than that, its Epstein obvious.

Guess banging underage ladyboys while on coke wont sell tickets to his funeral.

@Bid Sniper: Plenty of white people go to Asia and have sex with underage girls there. I do agree it’s appalling and disgusting behaviour.

IMO Asia is the unofficial sex resort for people from Western countries.

        • Shane who? Isn't that a film about a gun fighting bloke and his hores…. err.. horse?

They live a fantasy world where sports people are heroes even though most of them are morally bankrupt.

Apparently this happens because of constantly seeing them on TV or something. It's all very fake.

    • -2

Wow! He did all that?! What a fking LEGEND!!!

    • -6

Yes a legend to hundreds of thousands of people. He also made a few mistakes like every single other person on the planet.

He dedicated his life to becoming the best in the world at what he does whilst you sit at a computer bagging out someone who has just died and creating forum posts about how to open a loaf of bread….

I hope to get tickets and will drive down to Melbourne to attend. I’m not the biggest cricket fan but did play a bit when I was younger and my brother is a big fan of Warnie. For some reason I just feel compelled to attend.

I don’t know why but his death was and still is quite shocking to me. It’s sad to see people bashing the guy here. Yeah he did some shady stuff but he was still well liked by many people and changed the game of cricket in the 90s and early 2000s. He probably achieved more than most OzBargainers ever will. I bet the last thing anyone on here would want after their death is for people to bag them out, yet they’re doing it freely to Warnie? Come on now…

Also is it just me or does it seem like Victoria is the only state that seems to hold state funerals for high profile people who have passed away? I actually never hear about state funerals being conducted in NSW or other states as much as Victoria. Do other states just not give a toss when someone famous or someone who has helped to shape Australian culture (like Michael Gudinski) passes away?

Port Adelaide legend Russell Ebert as given state funeral in Adelaide few months back

      • Good to see SA cares about its residents!

Be a alcoholic, adulterer, who loved a bit of substance abuse and just generally who was all round a bit of a flog - as long as you are good at sport YOU get a state funeral

    • Also happy international womens day for the other day.
  • He may have been a good guy but he did do dangerous things. Like heavy smoking and sun beds. Those two alone would have killed him!
You want to buy tickets to a funeral?! Did anyone buy tickets to Burt Newton's funeral?

  • I think it's sad that he died but we need to stop idolising people and hero-worshipping people who are just normal people

    • we're all just normal people, even the people that do extraordinary things
