  • Thanks, but I wonder why bike lights are so expensive?
It's cheaper to mount a maglight.

  • Not sure were you get your Wiggle price from http://www.wiggle.co.uk/lezyne-mini-drive-led-front-light/ says $72.90 if you have currency set for AUD I bought one form Wiggle 3 months ago and paid $61 it's a great light and at your price a great deal just a bit misleading with your wiggle price.

For those that have Ayups these aren't as good but at a quarter of the price great for commuting were you can quickly remove them etc. also less money lost if you loose them have them stolen etc.

    • That's strange. When I go to that link it's telling me $87.48.

Ahh I see.. if you change your shipping to Australia it updates. I'll fix the title.

      • +1

Yup if you have shipping as non UK it removes VAT still a good price though

  • 150 lumens? you guys are as bad as the "ride on" magazine. commuting includes both lit an unlit paths. you need not only to be seen (which this would do) but to see (which this would be ok for about 10-15km/h)

    • +1

Having actually used this exact light to commute and riding in total darkness it's fine, the average commuter isnt doing 30+kmh and if you are then no these arent the right lights for you, nor are they any good for a 24hr MTB race but they are fine for most people and 100 times better than the crappy flashing LEDS that most people use.

      • agree they've be fine for most, but i've got about 800 lumens on the front of my bike for commuting and am contemplating doubling it. going downhill at 50km/h in complete darkness you need all the light you can get.

Im planning to get that for my 5km commute :p I am not going to be racing home but do you think it will be fine?

Any light is better than no light, but that Aldi light is a normal filament i.e. it wont help you see much, the LED in the advertised light is literrally "day and night" really depends how much time you spend on bike paths vs. roads etc. and of course your budget

How about ordering a $5 set from eBay? You'll never worry about it being stolen/ destroyed.

I mean I'm pretty sure these ones for the 40x price are somewhat better, but I cannot justify the price, sorry :)

    • That's cool.

I guess the $450 NiteRider might be a bit too much :)

Our cheaper (but still high quality lights) include this one: http://99bikes.com.au/shop/accessories/tioga-et-usb-charging…
      for $22.

    • +1

well, when you ride into a pothole and bugger your wheel and find it is $50 to replace…

    • The $5 Aldi ones are fine…if you're just using them to be seen.
Being on the coast there's plenty of lighting so that probably all you need.

There's probably no difference between the Aldi $5 vs their $22 ones.
I got some $3 lights from a junk shop 5yrs ago & they're still going strong,
even after being bounced on the road a few times.

I think the word Bike, like Wedding suddenly jacks up the price.
They're leds with batteries and some rubber water proof sealing in plastic casing.
They're not mercury vapour lights for use at 100m under water powered by a hydrogen cell.

  • Don't see this as a bargain. I got this one recently:

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/190434970560?ssPageName=STRK:MEWN…

900 lumens and 2/3 the price.

    • +1

That's a very different quality light.

    • I have a similar light to this. definitely better for seeing when it's dark.

      • ^^ditto, its like a portable sun

    • How does that work? I am looking at something similar? Can you see clearly at night? How long does the battery last?

      That set specifically

1200 lumen out of two aaa's and long lasting as well- Nobel Prize for that manufacturer.

Are these lumen claims ever tested by anybody or is just a matter of how bold the copywriter is feeling on the day?

        • +2

The AAAs are for the tail light professor.

          The headlight runs on Li-Ions

        • I was referring to the ebay item directly above my comment.

        • +2

          As was I.

        • Oops- sorry- my mistake.

        • I would love to see that strapped to someones head, as is suggested in the description.

        • My friend has one similar and it was strapped to his head. The battery pack was at the back and the light at the front. Very effective. His product was 150$ from Anaconda or something. I believe this will have the same system? Why you hating on the product haha

        • as what massari was saying - i have the light strapped on my head, with the battery pack in my backpack. isn't heavy, but the light definitely isn't light (chuckles). it's ugly though, not in the same league as ayups.

          i bought mine from dx:
          http://www.dealextreme.com/p/ha-iii-cree-ssc-p7-c-sxo-3-mode…

battery going strong after 1 year, the light body does get hot if you are stationary (compared to riding with it; i think it's meant to work with air cooling).

i don't know about the 900lumens claim (for the one i bought) but it's wickedly bright; 5w bike lights have nothing on these. so if the description from your ebay link is accurate about the 1200lumens, then that does look like a great price.

      • They're bright as sin. It's like having a car headlight strapped to your bike.

Running time is typically quoted as 3 hours on high (there is also a low setting if you want to go longer). I haven't tested the limits yet, but I rode for 1.5 hours last night without a problem.

        • Thats good enough for me :D I only have a 30 minute bike ride but it gets pretty dark these days >.<

        • Thats good enough for me :D I only have a 30 minute bike ride but it gets pretty dark these days >.<

      • I'd recommend an XM-L over a P7 - newer, more efficient.
As for overheating when stationary - you should switch it to low mode if stopped for long.

And I think these are far too bright to put on your helmet on-road. You will blind people. They need to be on the handlebars and dipped. And don't even think about using strobe mode on the streets.

  • All those front lights are poor value compared to what is available on DX etc.
If you are riding away from streetlights, get something with an XM-L and 4x18650 battery pack.
Less than $50 for a complete kit, with maybe 600 lumens (ignore the claims).

For being seen, $20 will get you a good Cree XR-E torch and handlebar mount.

The linked $59 torch claims 150 lumens, but charges by a USB cable - I'm highly dubious.

However, I have not seen the same quality rear lights on DX.
