Online Purchases Using Latitude 28 Degrees Card While OS - Unable to Receive Verification Codes As Mobile Roaming Not Enabled

I guess this post is mostly for people who have a Latitude 28° credit card which can be useful for overseas travel or overseas purchases.

I am currently overseas and has been trying to make online purchases using this card. However I have been unable because I cannot receive verification codes which are sent to my Australian mobile phone number. Of course, I don’t have global roaming enabled on my Australian phone due to cost. However, I have a local mobile phone number using a locally purchased SIM.

The interesting and annoying fact is that Latitude finance will not temporarily change a registered mobile phone number on the account to an overseas mobile phone number. They’ll only send verification codes for online purchases to Australian mobile phone numbers.

Just FYI.

Note: Latitude don’t send codes to emails, only SMS.

I believe most mobile providers allow you to receive roaming text messages for free. I leave my Amaysim roaming on (data off) for incoming messages for my credit card purchases, which works well. Maybe double check with your provider?

Otherwise, some banks allow your verification code to be sent to an email instead of mobile. Maybe not Latitude though.

Nothing to do with the card, this is a user issue not being able to get your verification. Put your SIM card in and you should receive texts even without roaming.

GOOD. That's exactly the way it should be for security purposes. Would be worried if they did.

  • Seems reasonable to me.

  • Did you do the thing where you tell them your going overseas? I would think they turn off 2FA during that period.

    • yep
i always tell them i'm going overseas and what period and where so they dont block my payments

What a misleading title. Minutes of my life I’ll never get back.

  • Actually this is interesting although in practice, I don't understand as a tourist why would you want to buy things online when overseas.

Unless you are not a tourist…..

So the lesson is to keep your phone on roaming or at least, don't swap SIM card to local SIM.

    • Simples… I want to buy a new mattress online for my bed, as you do!! And also buy insurance for my Hilux, as you do! All done online here!

    • Not all Mobile providers support International Roaming - eg. BOOST, BELONG…..
There are occasions you may want to buy online - Booking Hotels, Booking tours….

Agreed, like everyone here have said, this is a security feature and your inability to receive 2FA texts is definitely your problem. I too am currently overseas but am able to receive messages on WiFi (leaving my phone in flight mode and then turning WiFi on). WiFi Calling exists as a feature that you can enable or disable and is available on most newer phones. If your phone is 2-3 years old, it may still support this. Works fine on my Samsung S9 and S7 Edge. Also, you may need to check with your carrier if they allow this.

    • Good idea.

    • Thanks, I’ll look into that!! That’s why I’m here -to learn!!

    • I would disagree. 28 Degrees promotes itself as THE card for use overseas and then makes it impossible to use for some customers.
Surely they could provide alternative options. Perhaps answer security question(s) or authenticate user via their App.
BELONG for one does not support WiFi calling.

Text messages are FREE to receive even when roaming.

    • Don't think OP has roaming enabled due to cost.

Surprised that since CommBank app can send codes via the app not more companies are implementing the idea.

      • Very small market for the change; probably doesn't make a business case.

Don't think OP has roaming enabled due to cost.

enabling 'roaming' allows you to make and receive calls. You can receive text messages for free!

" I don’t have global roaming enabled on my Australian phone due to cost." how so? if you don't answer your phone but only to receive SMS, it shouldn't cost you, even if you do, it will be really small cost. I would think. I have done this before, enable the roaming and just don't pick up the call, but only receive sms.

  • I am with Lebara, currently overseas, and even I can get free incoming sms. Double check with your provider, pretty sure you can receive sms's as many here have indicated.

  • Make sure you have roaming data turned OFF
