Cheapest Post Paid International Roaming

Hi All,

I am looking for an option to convert my existing Pre paid sim (Boost) to Post paid ( any provider) with cheap international roaming options.
Basically for around 6 weeks may need to receive some calls while out of Australia.

I have checked Telstra, Vodafone, Optus but they offer on high daily rates.
Felix is good option but its Pre-paid.
Note that I need postpaid sim because pre paid roaming is barred at the destination!

pre paid roaming is barred at the destination!

    What is the destination?

  • Post Paid

Mate only really three major carriers for post paid international roaming (the ones you mentioned) Telstra, Vodafone, Optus. I think amaysim offers it in prepaid too, but it is way more expensive than post paid companies. I think it used to be like $5/day or something with vodafone in the past.

Prepaid dont really offer full functionality like post paid does.

  • I don't know how reliable this app is because I only used it in one country and it wasn't the best, but AVO allows you to receive calls from your Australian number by forwarding the call to their Australian number.

I should note that if you are into politics AVO is a Russian based company.

Another options is to get a skype number and forward calls to that while you are overseas.

    • Ok will skype work even if my current number is offline or out of coverage

      • Yes, because call forwarding is done by your telco. You just need to set it up before you leave Australia

  • Not sure where you’re heading or what your situation is at the point you’ll be, but possibly consider a satellite short term contract? Can be cheap to hire, free inbound AU calls.

  • What country are you visiting, and what is your 'cut-off' for cheap?

    • Given the answers above I will take anything now,

      • It's still difficult to answer because we don't know what country it is, so we don't know what price it will be. roaming to different countries/zones can have wildly different prices

        • Oh , India

          • @Ehty: Can you please confirm how prepaid roaming is barred in India? I'm a customer service rep for (you probably know what telco) and I haven't ever heard anyone complain of that issue, a bit weird as to how they would block prepaid roaming but not postpaid.

In any case, if prepaid roaming was possible Felix is a pretty solid value for money, but otherwise I think Vodafone is your best bet. Optus and Telstra are wildly expensive from what I've checked online

@Ehty: Isn't that for people who are subscribers of those local carriers? This shouldn't affect people who are Prepaid with an Australian telco from roaming in that location, I would think.

edit - nvm just saw your edit, that is an incredibly strange restriction..

@dm02: Prepaid services of customers coming from other states/ countries dont work, Only postpaid works.

                  • @Ehty: Weird.. in that case, unfortunately it looks like Vodafone is your best bet.

                    • @dm02: yup , will give it a try.

also found something on whirlpool related to crazytel and Telstra Wifi calling.

                      • @Ehty: Ah yep, Telstra wifi calling does work overseas (good catch, forgot about that). Might be a bit fiddly though, may be worth giving it a shot

                        • @dm02: Thanks for the suggestions!

not sure how the wifi calls will work

  • Just leave a voice mail message telling callers to contact you via whatsapp with the same number. You can then use a local sim. Surely that's easier

  • For India, just buy a prepaid Vodaphone SIM when you arrive - they are cheap and calls are cheap and you can get them anywhere. Have done it many times pre-covid and never had a problem. You can use it when you return to Australia until it runs out.

    • Prepaid doesnt work where I am going
