Recent Delay in Getting Australian Tourist Visa

Does anyone know anything about any delays in obtaining a Tourist Visa to Australia? Or know of anyone who has applied for one recently? I have a mate in Malaysia who's been waiting for his visa for almost a month now.

Prior to Covid, he would usually get it instantaneously. This time round could be the result of a Covid backlog, but I would have thought that would have cleared up by now.

Thanks all.

  • Hmm weird. I know people in Malaysia who applied for tourist visas to visit Australia at the end of March. It took a few days, but got it in the end. This was at the beginning of March. Perhaps your mate should try and follow up.

    You call that a delay?

My parents applied for a visitors visa in Febraury of 2019 and my mother only got a visa in January of 2022 - my father passed away stiull waiting for a visa.

Australia treats the smaller countries like shit.

  • We have a delegation visiting us this week from Malaysia. Some of them took more than 3 weeks to get their visa and they were Government officials who have all visited Australia on numerous occasions. A number of them got hit with requests for more information from Department of Home Affairs, that they have never had to provide before.

    • copy of passport biodata page and national identity card
    • full itinerary
    • a list of all family members, names, DOBs, relationship to you
    • a list of all travelling companions, names, DOBs, relationship to you
    • a list of family, friends and contacts in Australia, names, DOBs, relationship to you and whether they are citizens or permanent residents, if not, their visa status and reason for their stay in Australia
    • three months bank statements showing salary payments
    • evidence of your employment commitments that demonstrate your intention to return
      the list goes on..

that they have never had to provide before

Dept of Home Affairs seems to be totally out of control these days. My view is that this is indicative of how the LNP treats people from other countries, and that they are pushing this through the relative departments as policy changes, but I don't have any evidence of that.

      • but I don't have any evidence of that

But what the heck, you can do your standard, push your politics post anyway… Bargain!!

Fair enough, but how else can I make a change, to a government that affects me, if I don't keep pushing my views to a wider audience. Not specifically this OP, but plenty come on here complaining and a lot of people do nothing more than that, which does nothing.
There is an election this year.

    • Yea, he was asked for all this too. Unfortunately it might be the norm. He'll probably get it eventually, but perhaps not in time for my wedding :(
      Thanks for sharing.

  • He has been waiting a month? Our borders were closed then when he applied.
