For more supported site use unblock-us.com for ~$5.

    • How do they compare to unotelly?

    • Do you know of a site which has a comprehensive list of sites which are not normally available to Oz?

      • $5.00, unblock-us.com http://support.unblock-us.com/customer/portal/articles/29157…

unotelly also claims they support more sites if you pay $8/month… did not try those other sites though.

        • Great, thanks!

        • +1 for unbluck. I have it set up at home on my modem and all devices work unblocked. I use the unblock app while on the go.

        • You can put the DNS settings on the modem/router if you want all your devices connected to your home network to use tunlr service.

  • What do they get out of it by providing it for free?

    • +2

If I have to guess, the statistics from your site browsing etc should provide them with a global database of what you are browsing, buying, watching, eating, sleeping, cooking etc by country specific.

      Data mining?

      Just a guess.

      • more then a fair trade in my opinion(but maybe not to others). But if so they should be open about it and clearly list it (if they already don't if they do this).

        • +1

"If you are not paying for it, you're not the customer; you're the product being sold."

          It's best to assume this.

  • +2

I have used a similar service before, http://www.tunnelbear.com/ is great so easy to use, if you pay for the extra bandwidth you can also use from iPhone/iPad

  • This service works but the picture quality I get on Netflix is inferior to what I am getting from using Strong VPN

  • DNS hijacking?

    • Apparently so.
The IP address returned through this DNS is different
Does anyone know how they got this to actually work?
Are we instead being redirected through a proxy when accessing hulu?

      • Appears so,
"We’re using sophisticated technologies (a.k.a. the Tunlr Secret Sauce ©) to re-adress certain data envelopes, tricking the receiver into thinking the envelope originated from within the U.S. For these data envelopes, Tunlr is transparently creating a network tunnel from your location to our U.S.-based servers. Any data that’s not directly related to the video or music content providers which Tunlr supports is not only left untouched, it’s also not even routed through Tunlr. In order to use Tunlr, you will have to change the DNS address"
I'm guessing its a proxy/MITM where they proxy the country check and the CDN traffic (usually on a different domain anyway) goes straight to you, just my hunch.

        • FBI recently captured many DNS hijacking servers.

    Works fine for free.

Tried BBC iPlayer without any problems.

Use it in conjunction with very useful multiple DNS changer, DNS Jumper v1.04 here:

    http://sordum.3eeweb.com/?p=4573

    • +3

Thanks for DNS Jumper. It works really well. No reboots, no restarting the browser. A few simple clicks, and bingo, everything works.

    • Just downloaded DNS Jumper it looks really handy. Thanks for the link.

    • How do I use DNS Jumper?

    • Dns jumper is great!!!

    • after add the DNS in DNS Jumper, press apply, my Sophos ( a free anti virus i got from my uni ) detect suspicious behaviour and stop it. Any help ?

      • tell Sophos to allow it. It's suspicious behaviour if you didn't initiate it, but since you are, it's fine.

    • Anyone got something similar for mac?

      • -1

U gotta be kidding me! It has nothing to do with the OS. It works on all devices. Did you go through the setup instruction @ http://tunlr.net/get-started/

        • +3

YOUVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME!. To DNS JUMPER!

        • +1

          edit: Sorry my bad :S

      • +2

j5ive - The best way to get a set up like DNS Jumper natively in OS X is to set up locations in network settings. Save your current location as Australia (or whatever you like) and set up a new location called USA or Tunlr or whatever you like. Then while USA location is selected set the DNS settings for your ethernet/airport connection to the addresses provided by Tunlr. When you want to swap back to default settings (i.e. no tunlr DNS) you just change your location to your Australia location in network settings.

With this set up you can have many locations that all have different settings for your airport/ethernet. No need for a 3rd party app.

        • Thanks a bunch for the info! :)

Do I have to reboot between changes?

        • Sorry j5ive for not replying earlier. I think I usually just turned my wireless on and off to be 100% sure it changed. If you have ethernet just unplug and plug in again and it should be done. This probably isn't even needed, I'm no longer using OS X so I can't test.

        • how do you set up locations in network settings, sorry to be a bit clueless about this :S

        • Daline :
right click your wireless icon, click "open network preferences…",on top, there is you location…….

    • Works perfectly for iPlayer however it doesn't seem to work for playing the BBC channels live. When I click on the play live button under TV on the BBC website it just comes up with an error message, saying unable to load media. Annoying because I thought I might be able to use this to watch the BBC's F1 stream for the races they broadcast. Looks like I'm stuck with Ten's rubbish SD coverage riddled with ads.

      • Pay $5/month and get more professional service from unblock-us.com..I used them b4 and they support all the live BBC streaming channels.

Ive been using http://hidemyass.com/vpn/ $80 per year and works great, Best app ive used and 100's of servers to choose from all over the world.

Must say though Im pretty impressed with Tunlr - Speed was bit slower but hey its free

    • Reading the info on the page, it's not supposed to be slower, as it doesn't tunnel the data through them. It appears to be a free version of Unblock US.
It worked well for me, but admittedly, I can get much faster speeds locally. May be that's just TPG's pipeline to the USA….

    • +1

Just a quick comment. I used Hidemyass for a year, the bandwidth for me was terrible. I didn't renew. I hope your experience is better.

I'm using Tunlr now to listen to Pandora radio on the WDTV Live. Cheers!

  • what about for PS3? does it work for PS3 as well?

    • Netflix works well on ps3

      • do you know or have a manual on how to set it up on ps3? do i need to run linux?

  • +1

damn, i pay for Unblock US.
will get a friend to try this

  • +1

Just watched yesterday's episode of Community on Hulu and now listening to Pandora on the iPhone. Awesome!

BUT… Is there a way to change your 3G/GPRS DNS on an iPhone so this works away from home? It would be unreal to have Pandora stream over Bluetooth to the car stereo without a paid VPN!!!

  • Quality is limited on abc? unless my iternet is being bad. :(

  • This + DNS jumper works GREAT. Noticed no stutter or lag on Hulu with Telstra ADSL2 4km from exchange (so shit speeds anyway).

    Thanks OP!

Trying to sign up with the Netflix free 1 month trial but keep getting "Netflix Site Error". I am using the Tunlr DNS settings and I am able to surf Netflix but not able to sign up :(

    • Same here. It would be great if someone else who got it working could give any tips or solutions they found.

      • Same here

        • Same here

      • +2

OK, I was able to make SOME progress…
Use playmo.tv dns service when signing up, this will allow you to go up to the payment page
(note, that playmo.tv will only work ONCE without their beta invite link, to use playmo.tv dns again, restart your modem to get a different ISP IP address (if you have dynamic ip))

On the payment page, any details from sites such as fakenamegenerator do not work. Neither do real Australia based credit cards, or australia based paypal accounts.
I signed up for a virtual US based credit card (Entropay) for which you have to load min USD $20 from your real credit card. However even this virtual credit card information was not accepted by netflix.
Don't know where to go from here, any suggestions would be great

Oh, and you can also log in to netflix with login: herbie and password: herbie, however there is no streaming service AFAIK on this account)

        • Well I dont know why you guys are having issues with australian CC, as I used my Australian Citibank Visa debit and accepted it, I provided real USA address though.

        • I stopped using netflix a while ago as I had seen most of the content that interested me at the time but I had no problem using an Australian debit card. Perhaps things have changed.

        • I just use postcode 91210 and it took my Australian credit card fine.

        • Just tried entropay.com and doesn't work with Hulu plus as is has address verification and entropay does not support this.
Was a bit bummed so just renewed my netflix account with it to eat the credit I put on the card.
I was going to sign up for this virtual CC http://www.usunlocked.com anybody used before.

      • My CBA MasterCard debit card did not work.
When I tried my AmEx credit card the transaction worked fine.
I assumed that the Netflix service requires a credit card (but note that someone did get signed up with a debit card - so who knows? Trial and error it seems).

Note, you need a 5 digit zip code. Just use your Aussie postal code with a leading zero. It must be the code your credit card address is linked to - so 90210 will not work.

        • I used an Australian Mastercard and used 90210 to sign up.
Maybe it will fail later when it tries to take payment (still on the 1 month free trial).

      • I got Netflix working - it didn't work with paypal at first so then I used my NAB card, added an additional '0' in front of my zip-code and it worked. Even got a call this morning from the bank to confirm if I made the transaction with Netflix. Good luck.

    • I eventually got it to work by using a trial of unblock us (http://unblock-us.com/). After successfully registering with Netflix, I was able to get it working on both my Apple TV 3 and PC.

Why is this a deal? Normal price is free…

    • +1

Many people pay ~$50 to ~$90 / year to get this service from other providers.

      Check unblock-us, unodns, strongVPN, playmo.tv

  • A long time user of ozbargain. Thanks OP. Works like a treat and thanks Horizon for DNS jumper.
I registered just a few minutes ago just to say thank you!

  • Hi all,

A little off topic, but related question. There is a site I wanted to watch which I guess is similar to Hulu/Netflix etc, but only available to Hong Kong residence, then would I be able to use that DNS jumper app to watch it?

I tried using a Hong Kong Proxy but still doesnt work…

Not sure what else i need to "pretend" I'm in HK….

    Thanks

  • Really, I've just closed my HMA account. Over the price, way too expensive for what it is! and speed has been really bad as late. Heaps of IP addresses are known by hulu and are now blocked on HMA. Just seems to be a drag to use, so as a result I didn't really use it enough.

  • Anyone got this working on a Boxee box?

    • Would like to know too.

  • Has anyone tried this for like longer than a month?

Currently paying for UNBLOCKME for nothing other than Neflix.

    • I did about one month.

      • Did as in you switched to something else?

        • +1

No I've been using this for one month b4 that I used to pay $5/month to unblock-us.com. I was happy with unblock-us as well. But this is free!

  • thanks great alternative to unblockus for me!

  • Awesome. Works like a charm with hulu plus.

    • How did you pay for Hulu plus in Australia.. Wont accept my payment from either CC or PP

  • Thanks, gonna try and see if the Xbox 360 US apps work with this.

    • How'd you go with it? I think you have to create a US based Xbox live account first. I just hope you don't have to sign up to another gold subscription to access netflix with the US account.

  • You can also use Playmo.tv for free while its still on beta.

  • Is it fast? I have a Linode server that I pay $20/month for. I've setup a proxy server on it (and a VPN which I hardly use). Using it as a Proxy server I can pretty much max out my 20mbps DSL speed on it (which obviously allows me to stream netflix and everything else at the highest quality) ..but hulu doesn't work anymore, they can somehow detect I'm behind the proxy

Might give this a go and compare it to what I have. All of these online services end up costing me so much at the end of the month (usenet, seedbox, spotify etc)

    • There is no point paying $20 only for streaming, unless you use seedbox and usenet.

unblock-us.com is quite good for $5

and tunlr.net for free with limited sites/app support are good enough for many.

      • I use my server for other things that come up from time to time (web server, vpn, ssh tunnelling, proxy server, file storage or even when I'm just experimenting with linux. It's a good learning experience)

But thanks for the post I'm gonna check out tunlr tonight after I go get that cheap dominos :D

  • anyone get cwtv to work?

ads play but shows dont :(

    any tips

  • Sorry if this is a silly question, but will this have an impact on my BitTorrent client/Dropbox and the rest of my Internet use?

    • +1

nope. only accessing those streaming sites trigger tunlr.net to pass you through a different method.

      • Oh cool. Thanks :)

    • +1

No guarantee though that they won't collect your internet usage stats, is there? Except for their statement if that means anything:

Any data that’s not directly related to the video or music content providers which Tunlr supports is not only left untouched, it’s also not even routed through Tunlr.

  • -8

I am going to write in caps b/c I am important

PEOPLE PEOPLE PEOPLE. USE A SERVICE CALLED ULTRASURF. IT SUPPORTS VIRTUALLY EVERY STREAMING SITE AND IS FAST

    • What's wrong with ultrasurf? besides the fact that it hasnt worked for me for hulu

      • try a different address

  • So I just stuck the Tunlr DNS into my router to try for a month before I cancel UNBLOCKUS.

Is it my imagination or is there serious lag before websites load using this DNS?

Also, I have the settings in the router because I have multiple devices and it just seems to work better. Is there any way for my PC to override the router DNS setting? If I put in my ISP's DNS settings into IE would it still be using Tunlr?

    • I'm with Internode and just tried the Tunlr DNS. Definitely noticed lag when loading webpages, have reverted back already.

  • Anyone ble to get this to work on iPad ….

    • it works if tunlr supports the associated ipad app. You can either put the dns settings on your modem/router or follow the method described in http://tunlr.net/get-started/get-started-with-iphone-or-ipad…

    • I've tried. It requires the free application Hulu Plus (Hulu Plus is a premium service for subscribers @ $7.99/month)

EDIT: Or you can try 'PlayOn' (free app, but requires a paid-for media server) or iSwifter which enables Flash on the ipad

  • gonna try it thanks OP

  • Not sure if I'm doing something wrong. I changed my DNS, checked all is ok on the tunlr website and got a big green tick Went to Hulu.com and tried to watch anything, and I got a "this video is unavailable at the moment" type error.
Anybody got Hulu working? Do I need to be paying HuluPlus first to get anything?

    • +1

      Try resetting your DNS cache.
In an elevated command prompt type in:
      ipconfig /flushdns
