Windows 14" Mac Pro Alternative

My partner is after a laptop for graphic design and was recommended at minimum a 14” M1 Mac Pro 8-core with 512gb and 16 gb ram. Apple is a bit pricey and we mostly use Windows.

What would be a good Windows based alternative? Any good deals currently that would be suitable?

Thanks

  • What is the budget? Keep an eye on heavily discounted laptops on Deals sometimes. New-gen just came out so manufacturers are trying to get rid of previous gens

    • Good question. I think up to $2k, but something around $1 to $1.5k would be best.

As someone who owns macs and laptops, few Windows laptops at 2K (let alone 1-1.5K) can match the build quality and performance of a Macbook. Powerful Windows laptops are often bulky and ugly, whereas thin and lights are weak as. If you must get a windows laptop check out the Asus G14/15s, Asus M14, XPS15, Razer 15, or even Kraken X15s which is an Intel NUC.

What software are you using? For a lot of things you'll either be paying more for a Windows laptop or getting something a lot slower. Plus what's your budget?

Might well be a Macbook Air or just buying a mac mini will do the job as well. The new M1 chips are very fast for the right things.

    • MacMini with a RAM Upgrade for around $1699…

On a budget could buy the 16GB/256GB version and whack on an external 1TB SSD. Refurb one is $1,189 too from Apple.

Really? I always thought that Apple products were overpriced and that you could get a Windows equivalent for a lot cheaper.

She'll be using mostly Photoshop, Illustrator, Figma and InDesign. Budget is around $1 - $1.5k might be able to stretch to $2k.

      Thanks

  • If you’re doing graphic design, what software package are you using? If it’s Creative Suite I’d get a Mac, as it absolutely runs better on an M1 processor.

  • I design on a M1 256GB 8GB and it works alright. Helps to restart every now and then, especially with After Effects. If she does it professionally, like gets paid for it, then the newer MacBook Pros with more powerful Apple chips would last years longer and run faster in the meantime. If she doesn't use After Effects then the base M1 might do her fine.

    • After Affects used to destroy my PC rendering back in the day (15+ years ago) haha. I don't think she'll be doing motion graphics. Mainly using Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign and Figma.

  • How does the Legion 5i Gen 6 i7-11600H in this deal look?
