Netflix Trialing New System to "Detect and Charge" for Account Sharing

Currently being trialed in 3 countries with plans to roll out world wide in coming months
System detects when a user is accessing an account from a different location to the one that usually accesses it

When a "freeloader" is detected it prompts the user to add an additional "offsite" user for a monthly fee (around $2 USD from current info)
the alternative is that the user can start their own Netflix account and transfer their viewing history etc across to their new account.

Maybe the days of sharing accounts is coming to an end…. lets wait and see i guess

Always wondered why they allow this, I have a son in Denmark using mine lol

Because people would downgrade their plans or move to piracy. Price rises have already made a 4 screen plan cost $10 more since Netflix launched while less content is available.

      • One of their key goals was to end piracy back at the start. This will definitely make me cancel my subscription if they bring it here…

If they do this, can I go back down to the lowest plan, and pay the extra house fee to get additional concurrent users? Might be worthwhile then lol

    • I’ve been using my brothers who lives in the US for a few years now.

  • Where there is a will there is a way.

    Especially for cheapskates like myself.
    So lets hope not!

Wonder how it works if you have a VPN set up, or want to watch on a mobile device.

Anyway people will probably have a work around soon enough or just go back to torrenting everything

    • Not sure, but could it be two simultaneous connections from different locations?

      • Two vpn ips from the same physical location?

Looks like Netflix is transitioning from selling their shareholders on growing subscribers to growing revenue/profits. I imagine anyone who regularly travels to Turkey just to watch TV will see this fee or something like it hitting soon (assuming they don't just throw this on for being outside Turkey/Argentina).

Still, it legitimises account sharing. I cancelled my account a while ago, if I jump back on I'll just find a family member to share with and pay that fee going forward.

  • They will get there eventually..
I remember when they trialed this:

interesting. I use my Netflix account at home and on my tablet while I travel, my wife and son do the same thing. How are they going to tell the difference between a commuter and a freeloader?

    • Thats where the data scientist show their worth?

  • I think it will work similarly to how Google asks "Have you signed in from another location?"

it's just ridiculous, if you are paying for the membership which allows 5 profiles, it shouldn't matter whether they live with you or not, you're paying for it.

  • I just discovered Kodi Seren + Real Debrid and it's amazing. Only $4 a Month too. I gave up on setting up kodi a few years ago but now the guide is way more comprehensive. I ll be dumping Netflix once all my ccgtv Netflix credit runs out next year lol

Netflix keeps going up and up, the content these days is pretty bad they're making it hard to keep using it..

  • How much do people actually value Netflix if many don't seem to want to pay for it?

  • Raspi + docker + usenet + plex

  • so what do users like myself do who are part of the netflix family in Ozbargain?

  • Netflix Tests Another Way to Charge for Password Sharing

"Customers in Argentina, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and the Dominican Republic will be asked to pay an extra fee if they use an account for more than two weeks outside of their primary residence, the company said Monday. This won’t affect the use of Netflix on mobile devices such as smartphones, tablets or laptops, nor will it affect people on vacation. The additional home will cost 219 pesos ($1.70) in Argentina and $2.99 in the other countries."

So, what about people using chromecast with google tv or amazon firestick?

  • Blergh. Got hit by this due to using Argentina regional pricing. The Turkish hack doesn't work for myself. Guess I'll have to break the news to the fellow sharers that the account will be getting shut down.
