Can I Claim GST Refund on Apple AOC Store Paid with Gift Card?

I'm planning to buy MBP 14 before travelling back to my home country in 2 months. Has anyone ever claim GST for apple product bought from AOC store? Is it possible to claim if I pay with gift card?

  • Isn't that loop closed now. You can't claim if you are planning to bring device back

        Should be fine then mate

        • right, thanks mate. hopefully it's a smooth process with printed invoice

    • Source for this? I'm planning to buy an iPhone in a few months before heading for a holiday.

Google TRS. It said you have to pay back the refund if you bring the items back into Australia.

          Always been the case

@vodamerc: I think but not enforced people used to bring it back . No checks

          • @vodamerc: Previously you can bring back without declaration if it's under 900 AUD. They changed the wordings on the website, it sounds like if you're bringing it back at all you have to pay back the refund. ATO website still lists the concession @ 900 AUD though.

Yes, if you have a GST invoice that specifies the cost, the type of payment doesn’t matter.
Note there have been changes recently about them disallowing claims if you intend to return to Australia with the item.

    • ah okay, cheers mate. should be all good then

  • Does the new rule mean that duty free purchases have to have tax paid back if the item is brought back into the country?

Other than being overpriced, the notion is the same in that there is no GST on the item same as seeking refund through TRS

  • You need to bring the tax invoice (it has to say TAX INVOICE!!!!!!) and show the product at the counter.
The tax invoice has a GST amount. This is the amount that is refunded (to a credit card is the most convenient)

    • alright noted. thanks for that, will get tax invoice from apple later

  • You definitely can man, I have done it myself, but like above posters say. You need tax invoice.

  • For anyone else reading: it should be the original tax invoice, not a copy or a duplicate. The one time I had a copy (physically bought, needed them to reprint the receipt in store) and not the original and the TRS officer refused me. Luckily they will allow you to follow up by emailing the original.

That was an unlucky case because I've had more leniency on other occasions for other reasons

If I travel out of Australia, claim the GST refund and come back to make a product refund. Then I would essentially get free money from government? Seems like a loophole.

    • time to get my $8k macbook
