Upgrading to Nintendo Switch OLED

Hi all,

I have an old Nintendo Switch from when it first launched. I understand there have been a few upgrades since, but I was wondering when I should consider upgrading.

I find the old screen to be hard to see at times - it’s a bit dim and there’s some lag when connecting it with the TV. I don’t play it all that often at the moment but there’s the new Zelda and a few games coming up that I’ll want to play. I also didn’t know if there was a new switch on the horizon. If China is impacted with the war and Covid then there might be issues with supply and also I don’t know what inflation will do to the price.

Should I wait until Zelda comes out? I don’t want to bother with the Afterpay deals.

Thanks!

If your playing handheld frequently it’s probably worth the upgrade.

But theres always rumours of a new device releasing shortly, the new DLC for mario kart makes me feel like they are building into something bigger… but who knows.

You will still be able to flog your old switch for a decent price so the upgrade wont be too much.

    • You will still be able to flog your old switch for a decent price

Espeically since OP got at launch, it would be a one with the hardware exploit i.e. hackable.
It will sell for a better price to the right people

      • I looked it up and I got this. Serial starts with a XAW4 “Definitely patched- Wait till someone finds something working for a patched Switch unit, You need to be VERY patient. Alternatively you can sell the Switch and get a not patched one.”

        I guess not worth much!

EDIT: Upon further reading mine starts with XAW4000 (three zeros not four). I wonder what that means??

Q: The Serial of my Switch begins with four or more zeros, what does it mean?

A: Those Switches are all not patched and can be bought without hesitation. Leading zeros just mean that actual serial number that follows is very small, so the switch is rather old.

        • Serials beginning with XAW4:
Serials between XAW40000000000 - XAW40011000000 are safe to buy
Serials between XAW40011000000 - XAW40012000000 are possibly patched
Serials above XAW40012000000 are definitely patched

From GBAtemp. If bought yours at or near launch then it would be hackable. The hardware revision that patched out the exploit wasn’t until months later

          • @FireRunner: Ok great! How much do they go for? I assume there’s no reason to hold onto it? They won’t gain value in the future will they?

@jahar: Look up "unpatched switch" on eBay, Gumtree or FB marketplace to get an idea of it's value

I'm waiting for the new Zelda BotW. If you've made it this far, what's another 6 months or so?

Why wouldn't you bother with the Afterpay deals? Get an Oled at a discounted price? Otherwise, yes, if you enjoy your Switch upgrade. We sold our 1st gen Switch for $350 about a month before the OLed launched and it's worth the upgrade.

Oh it’s another thing I have to sign up for lol. Plus A few people have questioned if it affects your credit rating. I would pay the full amount up front if possible. I’ve never used it so I’m not sure if that’s an option.

I guess I was just wondering if there were any changes for better or worse around the corner. There are a couple games coming out late March that would be nice to play on an upgraded device. Would the 1st gen sell for much now I wonder?

Pros: OLED screen makes games look a bit better in handheld, feels more premium overall, better kickstand if you use it, better battery life than V1 Switch

Cons: No faster than original Switch, harder to open game cartridge slot

I upgraded to the OLED model, not the worlds most satisfying upgrade though don't regret it, would expect a new model Switch to be announced within 12 to 18 months

YOLO. If the Switch 2 comes out next year you can just buy that too.
