External drives not being recognised all of a sudden on Xbox One

Anyone had a similar issue of the xbox one S not recognising the external drive with games on it that has been used with no dramas for years?

This has happened out of nowhere from start of the year. Early January the drive was fine, after a mid Jan xbox update, now its no longer found ever since.

Ive done the resets, latest system updates, tried on another xbox one and nothing works.

All the while all 3 USB ports will charge the xbox controller with the genuine cable no problem. The light on the drive also turns on when plugged in. The device is seen in device manager on a PC. Its a SSD and its making no strange noises.

Any thoughts before I maybe format it, which I think will do nothing but gotta try as the last resort?

  • Connect it to a pc and run diagnostics on it, see if there is any problems with the ssd first.

btw ssds have no moving parts, hence solid state disk - ie they never make noise.

    • No issues on the drive. It may not be a thing but yes I know about SSD non moving parts but just thought id mention it incase some SSD drives make power like sounds or anything weird when failing?

  • try a different USB cable?

my 2tb samsung postable HDD was no longer being read by my xbox one S .

    tried a different cable.

    now works.

  • Yep, tried it with a brand new cable and still no dice.
