Moto Edge Fusion or Zenfone 8

Gdaay

My current phone a moto z2 play is coming to the end of its life.

I'd like to replace it by either the moto edge fusion or the ZenFone 8.

Z2 Play battery when new was acceptable. ZenFone battery endurance on GSM arena seems similar. But people online say the batter sucks. And then that it's ok once ZenFone 8 is updated to Android12. Is it shit still?

I like the z2 play front facing fingerprint reader. Is the ZenFone 8 underscreen finger print reader good? Or is it a useless gimmick?

I like the moto features like shake for flashlight or twist for camera. Are there equivalent good Android apps for other phones I can use and you can recommend?

I don't need a separate memcard. 256gb is enough of onboard or I can put my already existing 160gb card in.

Is volte calling important? Some people say ZenFone 8 volte is barely supported with some poking about but then it goes away after a Reboot. Is this true? I don't think my z2 play has volte and life has been ok.

I like the sound of ZenFone battery management to prolong it's life. Does the fusion have same?.I know z2 play doesn't.

I also like to have the ability to record phone calls, of course with both parties agreeing to it, something I can do with my z2play on Android 8 using NLL ACR. Do either of those phone support call recording natively or with a 3rd party app? I know for Android 9 at least ACR stopped doing it cos Google said no. Not sure if it's back again.

I don't care about high refresh rate screen.

Is ip68 on the ZenFone actually useful?

Cheerio

    Are they priced similar?
Personally, I would go with the ASUS Zenfone 8. Because it seems to have more local support and availability, (especially things like VoLTE where the budget Moto from Officeworks might get neglected). Zenfone 8 has proper IP68 protection. It uses a Snapdragon chip, which has better software support, and uses a flagship variant at that. The ASUS has OIS which the Moto lacks. Another point is that I've noticed 90Hz feels more like 60Hz, whilst 120Hz displays do feel significantly more fluid. As far as battery life goes, you should expect the ASUS to be noticeably better than the Z2 Play, but you can eek out more SoT by reducing the screen brightness, 60Hz, and putting it on Battery Saver mode (all of which should still be faster, fluider, and brighter than the old Z2 Play). The Moto does slightly edge out the ASUS, but not because it is more efficient, just because it has a larger battery.

edit: ASUS Zenfone 8 has a much more active community, expect a decent longevity.
edit: Moto Edge 20 Fusion is rather barren, not much long-term support.

The last thing is, the Zenfone 8 is one of the few "smaller" phones you can buy. The Moto is noticeably larger and heavier. And there are far more direct competitors to the Moto, than there are for the ASUS.

    • seems odd for op to shortlist 2 phones of very different size, specs, price , range

      • Well, one is along the lineage of what I have now. And the other a bit the same but it also fits in my pocket and Ive been a loyal moto fan for the last few phones.
