Replacement for 28Degrees Platinum Card? ($0 Annual, No Foreign Fees etc)

Looking for a card to replace our 28Degrees due to the long processing time on payments via the 28Deg portal, and how they handle transaction holds.

Key features required are $0 annual fee (only used for travel as a 'burn' card), no foreign fees, and the usual 'Platinum' level of insurance. General usage is for payment of things O/S where I don't necessarily trust the establishment (tip jacking in the US etc), or it is getting reimbursed because they don't take the work AMEX (or, see 1, I don't want to have the AMEX locked in case of fraud).

Any suggestions?

  • HSBC. As added bonus it also gives you 2% Cashback on tapping your card as long as you deposit at least 2K per month.

      Not a credit card.

If i have a fraudulent tip transaction I want it to be someone elses money

BankWest credit card zero pa fee no overseas transaction marked up. Can’t comment on the platinum insurance.

  • Their transaction holds are really annoying. For eBay the way to go around it to not use direct credit card option, but to use PayPal with 28Degree card. amazon US doesn't have this hold normally. For other site, if you get the message, you can reply 1 for authorized then redo the payment again in half hour.

For payment if I'm urgent I will just use bpat even it will cost 95c.

The other annoying thing is how you can't download any csv files for transactions. I'll get around with convert their statement to excel monthly.

    • Not so concerned with buying stuff via PayPal etc, but rather when transaction holds are treated as actual payments which are then reimbursed. Such as rental car or hotel holds.

Plus their whole SMS authentication thing is ridiculous, as it often doesn't send on a reasonable timeframe, and also relies on global roaming networks picking it up properly. Quite often they also message my partner when it is my card that was used. Which is great when its the middle of the night back in Aus…

  • and the usual 'Platinum' level of insurance

28 Degrees doesn't really have this. They've recently introduced a temporary very basic travel insurance product but when you look closely its not a traditional platinum card by any means.

    • Yeah. Hence “Platinum”. It’s generally enough that they will investigate things rather than just telling you it’s your fault.

Story time, I once ate at a diner in the US and put a $2.50 tip on the bill, that was interpreted as a $250 tip when it was processed 4 days later, and took about 5 months to sort out because the free card I had didn’t have “Platinum insurance”. Complete BS by the card issuer, but that is why I want a card that I can lock and park to resolve later rather than losing my primary means of payment while OS.
