Tech Mall - PC Byte - Dodgy

I purchased a Samsung SSD from Tech Mall eBay store 3 years ago and it's dead, it has a 5 year warranty. Tech mall eBay store doesn't exist anymore but it's the same company as PC Byte (Tech Century Pty Ltd), has the same phone number, address, and ABN.

However when I called up I'm told it's a different department and to speak to the ebay store (that doesn't exist anymore).

Seems like a nice way to avoid warranty claims.

Anyone else have experience with warranty claims on the now disappeared tech mall eBay shop?

Go directly through Samsung instead with an RMA. Way easier going through the manufacturer for RMA's generally compared to eBay sellers.

    • In the past I've found ebay sellers quicker to deal with, when I had an issue with my motherboard the seller sent a replacement right away (I forget the seller). But probably wouldn't happen on a 3 year old item.

        Its present now.

  • That's not uncommon and one of main reasons separate companies are setup is so they can limit liability (you know the Pty Ltd part).

Go to manufacturer directly for warranty support.

Never buy stuff off eBay that may require warranty in future. They can disappear overnight and you usually can't even trace an ABN.

    • It's not a separate company though, it's the same exact company with the same name and ABN.

  • the tax invoice will have an ABN, so you should be able to use it as proof of purchase with PC Byte.

although.,.,., they really should be using a different abn if they are trading under a different business name.

    • they arent trading under a different business name, simply a different user name on ebay.

"it has a 5 year warranty" - the key here is with the ebay shop or with the manufacturer. Electronic/PC normally 1-3 years with shop and the rest with the manufacturer.
