Question: Breville Dual Boiler Espresso Machine Heat Up Time

May pull the trigger next time the dual boiler goes on sale, but there's one thing not clear…

Does it heat up instantly or need time to boil? If not instant, how long does it take from powering on to ready for the first shot?

Currently we have the Barista Touch, it's a thermoblock machine, so pretty much instant. We have a separate grinder, also we don't use the programmed drinks function, and I froth milk manually. It's a great machine, but we don't use many of its features, that's why thinking about the dual boiler.

  • My experience is that it takes anywhere from 6-10 mins (depending on model!) to get a nice stable steam level out of the breville boiler based machines. Much slower that the thermoblock systems but the boiler systems are better if you do lots of steaming or lots of coffee's.

    Breville Dual Boiler …
more than a minute, less than 10mins for sure.
I'll go 5 mins to be ready, longer if you're a perfectionist and want better heat soak/stabalisation time.

  • Ok, it's a reasonable wait. Will take a few minutes to get ready anyway.

If you leave the machine on, is it heating all the time? So you would turn it off if you know you aren't going to use it until hours later?

  • It takes like 1-2 mins for the boiler to reach 93 degrees but it takes a bit longer for the steam boiler to build up enough pressure to be able to steam and pull a shot simultaneously. So its like 4-5 mins to steam and pull a shot simultaneously, otherwise you just pull your shot and then steam after the shot is pulled.

The reality is that even for a thermoblock you should be waiting at least 10 minutes for the grouphead to warm up.

    • Yeah I was going to say - the water might be hot straight away but good for the cup, basket, grouphead etc to be warmed as well. so I usually wait around 10 - 15 mins.

      • Wouldn’t getting an empty shot warm ip all the components? I have a bambino plus. Ok, it’s thermojet and heats up in 3 sec but I still get an empty shot with portafilter attached before getting a coffee and it’s good.

    • I don’t know if it does heat up when in standby, I don’t feel any heat from it. I sometimes run hot water to pre-heat but often can’t be bothered. I just leave the portafilter besides a window let the sun do its thing.

  • I have one of these - you can program it to come on at any time (probably just before you wake up) which will give it enough time for the machine to heat up and transfer some heat to your cups sitting on top. If you don't use it for a period of time (feels like 30-45mins) it shut's off but I find it takes a while to completely cool down again so with turning it on again it doesn't take long to come up to temperature.

  • Mine takes about three minutes to heat up from cold, to when the machine allows you to pull a shot (a little longer, possibly 3.5 mins if it's a cold day with low ambient temperatures.

Probably another minute or two before the steam boiler is ready (otherwise it just beeps and no steam comes out).

Takes about 15 mins (in addition to the initial 3-ish mins) for the portafilter to come up to temp, once inserted into the group head. I usually make my coffee about 15-20 mins after I turn it on. Mine auto shuts off at 20 mins.

Note the later versions had more Watts compared to some of the earlier ones so hear up slightly quicker. And I think you can disable auto off in the latest version too.
