Automotive Electronics Repair - Multi-Functional Display Repair

A bit of a long shot, looking for a specialised shop that can repair multi-functional displays in Sydney.

We have an older Toyota with multi-functional display not turning on, apparently it's a relatively common issue due to a particular connector/solder join failure on the main board. In the US, there are shops experienced in such repairs. Basically you send in the faulty unit, they perform the repair then send it back.

Are there such shops in Sydney? Would prefer to bring in the unit rather than posting back and forth. It will require experience in diagnosing electronic components and precision soldering skills.

Someone documented steps on how he tracked down the problem and ultimately fixed it, it is beyond me, but surely do-able for people with the right skill. It will be expensive if this is a one off repair, so hopefully there are shops that do this kind of repairs all the time and charge a fixed price.

P.S. Have tried looking for used units, they are very rare.

  • Try contacting Bankstown Sound or similar specialists to see if it’s something they do.

  • If it turns out to be an expensive repair, you could consider replacing the current unit with a newer one. Is the current one an OEM or something you had installed separately?

    • Yeah, it's an OEM one, no aftermarket alternatives.

I can put an aftermarket double-din under the MFD, but not replace it.

Also, aftermarket is not cheap either, the head unit itself is probably $500-600 then plus the steering wheel module, wiring harness, analogue to digital convertor or bypass the digital amp but need new speakers. It's going to cost more than a grand and still has a broken MFD.

  • Is it a Prius?

    • You bet, and with navigation, the non-navigation unit is easier to source.

  • Try injectronics in melbourne. They do lots of automotive modules.

  • Thanks guys, will see how it goes.
