Trade-in Phone Damaged before Receiving New Phone

Trading in a S8 for a pre-ordered s22 through the Samsung Trade-Up Program for the bonus trade-in offer, since a S8 with no issues was only worth $5. Now yesterday, I accidently had the phone in with the laundry for 5mins and its now water damaged (despite the IP68 rating) - it functions but seems slow and the selfie camera is cloudy.

Anybody been in a similar situation?

I read that Asurion caught on to people not sending in their phone… So, whenever I get my s22, should I still send my s8 in? or contact Asurion and ask if they want it still? what will happen to my bonus offer if I do? I don't care if I have to pay the $5 for the s8.

You are liable to pay $60 in administration fee for not trading in the phone

    See Clause 5.6. Page 2.

There's also something about a mis-grading fee but I've no idea what that fee could amount to. Your bonuses and trade-up discounts will probably be fine.

Bonus is probably fine. Will most likely get hit with $60 admin fee on top of the $5.

This was back in September last year but I had the same situation. I dropped my S10+ and smashed the glass. I decided not to send it and they only charge me the trade in value of $90 after a month. There was no admin fee of $60. Good luck!

    • yep the good old days, I did not have to pay the admin fee last May either when I did not hand in my note8.

I would just send it in as it is. They'll assess it anyway.

  • you can try to sell the damaged S8 for parts on eBay for $70 and make at least $5 profit compared to sending it in.

    • and make at least $5 profit

Then you have to pay tax

      • Paying tax is for suckers, learn from the billionaires

      • I'd love for ATO to tax my old phone sale, that would mean other costs associated with said phone should be tax deductible

  • you're most likely to be charged the admin fee as mentioned also.

  • Hi mate what ended up happening? I have seven days to send in my phone, will it be the device value $200 + admin fee $60 ? Do they also deduct the tradeup bonus that we received at the time of placing order?
