Products Similar to Don Strasburg

Really enjoy the Don dairy Strasburg taste.

I literally just wrap the 500g packaging whole in aluminium foil then put it in the oven until it seems ready. Comes out delicious don't need to add anything to it.

Bonus is its only like $13.80/kg which is amazing value.. Basically less than $8 for a large nice hot cooked meal when you calculate in oven electricity costs and clean up.

Has anyone found any other items or products that have a similar kind of taste or flavour to this?

I have tried Devon ham and some mince items but they didn't taste as good or anywhere near the Strasburg.

Chorizo looks nice but also not near the same.

Wondering if anyone else recommends any other products?

  • I like the Bertocchi one better than the Don one, they have it at Woolies but I can't say I've ever eaten it like that.

    • can you link which exact one you mean i might give it a go

how do you normally eat it.. i just use the oven because i was lazy and was easy set and forget and just put a timer on my pc while i play games..

do you guys pan fry it or microwave it or just eat it cold? no heating at all

      • It's this one:

        https://www.woolworths.com.au/shop/productdetails/712835/ber…

I had a bit of trouble find it on there so it might only be in certain stores, I am in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne.

And I usually have a few thinly sliced pieces in a toasted sandwich or cold in a normal sandwich or something….I can't say I've ever baked an entire roll.

This is what I think most people do. But each to his own. On the other hand not healthy if you eat too much of it.

        • So like you don't even microwave it or let it thaw you just slice it straight from the store no other added preparation?

Also what is the price per kilo for the bertocchi one?

          • @AlienC: No I don't heat it, if I put it in a sandwich toaster then that'll warm it up nicely, but i sometimes have it cold in a roll or something.

The Bertocchi one is a bit more expensive I think, its 8 bucks for 600g so $13.33 per kg but i do like it more than the Don one, though I like that too.

            • @Agarwal: Ah ok.

I always thought it was a bit cold even just to eat raw like still had some ice on it.

Turkey and Ham cold I don't mind and a few other deli meats from the chilled section.

But yeah i always thought this was better off heated.

I guess salami cold makes sense so this should too theoretically.

              • @AlienC: That is why it's usually called cold cuts/meat.

                What meat is cold meat?
Cold meats—also known as cold cuts, luncheon meats, cooked meats, sliced meats, lunch meats and deli meats—are precooked or cured meat, often sausages or meat loaves, that are sliced and served cold or hot on sandwiches or on party trays.

So they can be either hot or cold but usually sliced not as a roast.

  • now I remember - my ma used to slice it fairly thin and then fry it so it was crispy in parts

    umami ? yes my mami

    • I think I might try this the next time I get a free moment
