Pocket Hole System for $180?

For some reasons, I have watched numerous DIY renovation videos on YouTube. I notice this Pocket Hole System is very handy! I found Bunnings is selling it.

But seriously $180!

I am wondering if anyone knows any alternatives, or maybe even just a generic brand?

  • Krieg is the gold standard
You may find cheaper of the same brand on Amazon

They have different versions. Some with more bells and whistles, some with less features. I've never used it before so can't comment,

  • You get what you pay for, spend the $180.

Wait until you find out the new 720 model is $280

Anyway I have the Kreg and most options and it's great IMO. Don't regret it. There are other pocket hole jigs but I've no experience with them. Depending on what you want there are smaller and simpler kits like the 310 which should be under $40 and the 320 under $80 but they're certainly not as convenient or flexible as the full kit.

I hear ya, this is what I went with and it's doing fine for my small jobs - biggest was building a desk hutch for a 1.6m wide desk with two planks going across about 1.5 years ago, still standing today :)

You'll need to spend some coin on a variety of pocket hole screws as well - I got a 100pk of 1" but will depend on the wood thickness you work with. I ordered one of these from Amazon - great value ($36 at the time) Milescraft Pocket Hole Screw Starter Kit 700 Piece https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B06XYX8CFV/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_i_W…

Good luck! Take your time measuring, visualising and setting up and you'll get get good results, and don't forget wood glue like often do.l!

    • Great find on the screw pack. Just bought one.

You can buy the pocket hole mini jig for around $40 or the craftright equivalent for $30

Give this a go when you're starting out and if you use it a lot then consider upgrading.

Be careful with this. The one Kreg labels as mini isn't the small version like that Craftright, it's actually one for thinner material using smaller holes and screws.

      • The craftright one is for thinner material? On one of the pics on the Bunnings website it shows how to set it up for 38mm timber so I assume up to 45mm is ok?

        • No, I'm saying the Kreg one labelled as "mini" is for thinner material, down to 6mm IIRC so don't get confused thinking it's just a compact simple version like the Craftright and others.

EDIT: actually thinking about it more I think it's down to 12mm.

          • @apsilon: Ok, the kreg mini I have has been fine on 45mm timber.

            • @onetwothreefour: Now you're making me wonder if I'm misremembering. The Kreg mini was black rather blue and still had three guide holes but used a smaller drill bit and different gauge screws. It was only for a max of 18mm thick material IIRC. Similarly they had a HD version that was also black but for really thick timber.

              • @apsilon: Doesn't sound like the one I have, there are so many different versions. Mine's blue and definitely is just a budget version of the full size jigs.

@onetwothreefour: OK, I've been googling and I was wrong, I was thinking of the micro, not mini.

            • @onetwothreefour: Yeah mine too - I do find it super hard to clamp down well though. Plenty of slips unfortunately

@barge-in hunter: Yes I find that too, I used to use quick clamps but find F clamps to be stronger and don't slip so much.

  • aliexpress is sure to have a clone at a much cheaper price
