Has Anyone Used Their Credit/Voucher with Malaysia Airlines?

Hello,

I purchased tickets to Asia for travel in 2020 which obviously did not happen, and they converted my tickets to vouchers with very strict conditions

  • Book by June 2022
  • Complete travel by Dec 2022
  • Ticket can only be used in your name - cannot be transferred
  • Only 3 vouchers can be redeemed per booking (original ticket had 5 travelers - 2a, 3k)

I tried calling, Facebook messenger, submitting a case to see if there was any work around with the vouchers, as I prefer everyone on one booking.
I also prefer to give my credit to a family member. They give you automatic robotic answers and don't seem to know anything if it's outside their script
Every other airline has been lenient - refunded or credit with flexibility and long expiry, Malaysia does not even show compassion.

I want to use up the credit and go to Europe, but I'm worried I will spend another ~$5k with them only for them to cancel flights, convert my money into vouchers which I would have to use them in a certain timeframe which may not work for me and my family

I just want to know, if everything worked out okay with you and Malaysia Airlines - as you only ever hear about the complaints! Did everything go smoothly for anyone here in terms of using vouchers or flights?

  • Sorry I don't have any advise with your issue. This won't help you now but - when MH tried refunding me with their very limited vouchers ( 1 year expiry, can only be used for the same passengers, etc) , I went to PayPal and got it all back.

MH have atrocious customer service - once before their agent screwed up my booking and I lost all my money. Yeah I know I shouldn't have gone back to MH after that but mum and dad were familiar with MH and transiting through KL.

    • I wish I had paid via paypal, I paid via credit card for their travel insurance - I've tried to dispute with credit card and travel insurance but both have said since Malaysia airlines have offered vouchers there is nothing they could do.

The first time I flew with Malaysia Airlines was in March 2014, from KL to Beijing. My only complaint was that the flight took a really long time to arrive…

4 months later in July, I flew with Malaysia Airlines from Amsterdam to KL. This flight was much quicker, felt like a blast!

    • saucy post

I hear that flight to Beijing is still awaiting arrival

  • I redeemed the credit voucher at Christmas to fly KL - SYD. You should have received a code in an email with instructions. It was a little tricky but got there after not too long a period. It worked well enough. I recall it’s tied to you so you can’t sell it which sucks and you have to book by the end of the year.

Service was fine. Plane was heaving with Nepali students clamouring to work in Australia but apart from that, all good. I’ve since flown domestically in Malaysia to KK and Kuching and no dramas.

    • Glad to know you had a good experience, I actually never received a code I only found out my tickets were converted to vouchers once I called them with an enquiry. Was your voucher your e-ticket number?

      • I can’t recall but I have the vague recollection that it was a different number. Whatever it was I simply inputted it when booking online and hey presto - new ticket.

MH’s standards have swooned in recent years but they’re still a little better than Airasia. They’ve been a loss making enterprise for decades and are only kept aloft through massive subsidies by Malaysian tax payers. Not sure why they do this but there’s a lot about this place that I don’t get.

  • I called asking the same - Can the voucher be transferred to another person as the original passenger could no longer travel. The answer was straight up a no and they wouldn't let me escalate the issue at all.

We were given codes for the flights no travelled, which we were told we could just rebook new flights online. Though, we booked one of the passengers and received a notification to call them for the eticket issuance. When we called they insisted that the booking was not completed and it's now canceled (even though we got an email saying the payment was made). All in all the experience was such a pain, not to mention you now have to pain extra for check-in bags and seat selection. We wouldn't fly with them again.

    • Did you end up booking the flight? I think it is wise to be on the phone to them whilst making the booking, hopefully they will be helpful. I think I will try to steer clear from them after I redeem my vouchers

      • Yep, that's exactly what I did, I made them stayed on the line when I was rebooking, and didn't hang up until I got my eticket as I didn't want to risk having it cancelled again. It was my third call of the night after they hung up on me twice. Luckily the last person was friendly and understanding.
