Business Banking Account Setup Question

Hello everyone,

I have a question I need help with.

I'm setting up a new sole trader business.

I've registered my ABN and business name.

I've applied for an NAB Business Everyday Account (with $0 monthly fee). The account was approved and opened. I then registered for internet banking.

When I logged in, the system asked me whether I want to apply for a debit card to go with my new business account. I clicked yes and then it asked me what name I want on the debit card.

To my surprise the system would only allow me to have a card with the following "First and Last Name (abbreviated) T/AS Business Name (abbreviated)".

Sadly, neither my first and last name, nor my business name were recognisable from the abbreviations.

I was expecting that the debit card name would be as follows "Business Name". I wondered if this normal practice, so I opened a chat window and asked if this is normal. I was told it was.

That struck me as odd, so I'd like to get your thoughts. Can a sole trader have a business banking account in the "Business Name" only, or does the account name have to include "First Name and Last Name T/AS Business Name"?

I have the nab biz debit.

    It’s
    FIRST LAST
    BIZ NAME

    on the card
Almost all biz cards especially credit have the users name on the card for signature reasons.
Otherwise anyone with the card could use it.

A business name is not a legal entity, its you on the hook for everything so accounts will always relate to you personally. If it makes you feel any better even with Company account credit cards the nominated users name is on the card as well as the individual user has to agree to the use terms of the card.

No one else will see the card except yourself, don't think it is really matter.

  • It’s got to have your name (being the legal entity) trading as.

The business name, in itself. Isn’t a legal entity. You merely hold that name in your legal capacity.

  • Thanks everyone
