DIY Website Inc Shopping (Click and Collect) option - Cost Effective but Quality

Hey guys,

Looking for the right direction to give some family a hand with their small retail food business that are recovering from the floods in NSW :(

What's the best platform (cost effective, quality, ease of use, but has longevity and is decent) for a new website including a click and collect function? The main purpose is to have an online presence, showcase what they are about and use as a click and collect (maybe delivery options down the track). We have domain, logos, photos, etc.

I like to do things myself and learn as I go - I have made a few sites with Wix a long time ago as this was a good platform easy to give to the user to update. Is this still the case? I would like to learn and persevere with Wordpress (assuming this is still an upgrade from Wix?) but thought I'd ask the question as to what is easiest to save me some time not having to trial and error :)

Whilst I'm on this topic - the next item will be whether or not to setup socials shops eg Instagram shop. Is it worth it? Do these link to the website or are they managed separately?

Thanks in advance :)

  • Hi,

The online ordering space is dominated by some large players like Menulog, Ubereats, Deliveroo and DoorDash. Some focus on delivery while others do Click n Collect.

I get that you want to offer an online presence, but know what they are up against.

Is the food take-away or something else…

    Shopify or Square

    • Shopify are incredibly expensive when start looking at their fees. They're very polished and work well but you really pay for it.

Square are good but when you get into it do some things weird or some basic stuff is just missing. Playing with this currently but that's my take so far.

Wix, Squarespace, WooCommerce, Ecwid etc. There's so many to choose from it's impossible to recommend one without knowing a lot of details.

      • I use the basic plan, $29usd isn’t too bad.
On the platform for nearly 2 years now and it’s like the Apple of online stores, everything just works.
        I’ve prepaid for 3 years now and it’s $759usd.

        • We couldn't get by with the basic but even with that, the card processing fees were just too high plus there's additional fee for an actual POS which we needed for the physical store. They look cheap but if you need anything other than the simplest functions the costs quickly go up

          • @apsilon: I just bought the eftpos machine and running the basic free POS. Use it 2-3 times a month if lucky.

            • @omguleh: Sounds like it works well for you. For us it was the most expensive option we looked at short of something like Magento

For a small business getting started in e-commerce it's hard to beat Shopify or Wix as beginner friendly platforms. Check out a trial or videos but don't get sucked into anything dropship related, stick to your click and collect scenario to begin with. You could use WordPress + WooCommerce but unless you're willing to hire a professional I would advise against it as too DIY. Maybe check out WooCommerce as a self learning tinkering hobby but not for an actual business venture without experience
